Are there Hummingbirds in Big Cities?
Comments (11)Poor Claire! LOL That was mine and yep, I am in the city of Philadelphia. although right on the literal line between the city and a surrounding suburban county. Never thought it could ever happen - particularly since I never saw one growing up around here. But people said they were here and one found my spot. Now I have a couple. akchicago - if you are near any woods or creeks, etc., then they are probably nearby. It's a matter of getting some things that will attract them. I live on the 18th floor of a hi-rise apartment building with a 40ft long balcony and I have been growing shrubs & perennials up here for some time. The one that I think helped that they apparently spotted was a "Red Prince" weigela that was reblooming in August. I have the branches cascading over the rail and the red flowers were enough to get the attention of a migrating female. I also had a goldflame honeysuckle growing up a trellis that had a few blooms still around in August and when she discovered that, that did it! The following spring (last year), she returned and I was ready for her with a feeder and some additional plants that hummers like (Bee balm, dicentra, heurchera, salvia). She came in June 2005, nested, and hatched 2 baby boys sometime in July and they followed her up here. All 3 hung around through the summer until about mid-September, afterwhich they migrated to their winter home. This year, the first one to greet me on April 29 was one of the baby boys, now all grown up! I put that red vinyl lunchbag up last year with the hope that it would serve as a beacon so that hummers in the area might be curious and would investigate it and they apparently did. I think I may have some new ones this year too (possible new female). Others had reported using ribbons or other red objects with success, so I had tried that and noticed that new hummers or babies will go right up to it and start pecking at it. LOL So don't hesitate to give it a shot. Sometimes they'll instantly find you and other times it will take a little while but they are worth the wait! This is one of my returning males (was born last year and has made my balcony his territory...LOL):...See MoreJust got to the big city and found foodie stores, Help?
Comments (20)Well, I hit just about every store I wanted except Penzey's I am going to pick up some vietamese cinnamon tomorrow. I also hit Asian, Mediteranian, and an Indian grocery store. I couldn't believe how cheep the prices were on spices and seeds for sprouting and planting. I stocked up on corriander and Shiso to plant in the garden. I picked up DH's favorite wasabi products at whole foods, the 365 olive oil, I also like their shampoo, conditioner, body wash and lotion, all of them are 3.99 for a liter which lasts a while at our house. I went with the Lavender scent this time. At world market I picked up lots of lavender buds at reasonable price to make sachets and the thin pretzels that are in a huge bag and are like the old Mister Salty pretzels. I also spent quite a bit on 10 different herb plants that were good sized with multiple plants so am looking foreward to reorganizeing my herb garden. Tomorrow I am meeting with the purchasing manager about possibly carrying a popcorn that is grown in Nebraska. The company that they use now has been sold to ConAgra and they are looking for a new source. So will go and meet with them and the information. It is in the town that my in laws live and I am friends with the owner. I will also spend my required time ahem taste testing the olives on the olive bar. I also hit a couple thrift stores and 3 fabric craft stores, so I got a lot done in a little time. This time I made a list of all the places that I wanted to hit and the items that I needed. So will spend tomorrow finishing up and wishing I lived closer but definately love my home town of 555 people. Stacie...See MoreLittle kitchen in the big city
Comments (27)Thank you all so much! I love this forum! As for moving walls - this is a co-op building in Manhattan. For those of you who live in a saner world, that means that I'm not just bound by the building code, the mechanicals, and the laws of physics - I need co-op board approval too. The board must review and approve my plans before I can do anything. The building's alteration policy includes the usual 'no wet over dry' (e.g. you can't expand a kitchen or bath into a space that's upstairs from your neighbor's living room or bedroom). Moving walls or plumbing is a huge deal and might well be disapproved - it would certainly add many months and uncountable headaches to the process, not to mention more-or-less having to pay bribes to the Department of Buildings to get the necessary permits and 'exceptions' from our loony accessibility code. I don't have the time or energy for that. Also I don't really like open kitchens, and the living room is sunken so it would look stupid. I just revised my dishwasher plan in favor of an 18'' compact dishwasher - see http://suzanne10023.blogspot.com/2010/02/decisions-and-revisions.html The chest-freezer-in-a-closet idea is really interesting! I use my freezer much more than my fridge. And I did fall into a deep chest freezer head first once - with my feet kicking in the air! I was working at a Carvel as a teenager, and my coworkers laughed so hard that they could barely stop to pull me out. Horizontal cabinets are a problem for me, as I'm only five feet tall; I can't reach to close them. My first plan had a double corner sink (oooo!), but then I went back and measured, and found that that would put the sink more than four feet away from the drain (boohoo!). I was planning to make the pop-up counters out of wood, faced with thin granite floor tile, not countertop-thick material. And there will be two or three separate ones in a row, only about 16'' x 14'' each, which will raise and lower independently. They could be tiled instead - they just need not to show scorch-marks. Comments (10)Well blow me away. I had no idea you had visited CALAM!!!!! She told me how many of her friends are from the GW, but I don't remember her mentioning your visit. CALAMITY JANE: Did you give her that tumbler I sent you!!!!!?????? LOL. CALAM has a habit of giving away things - for example her very first project made in that class in PV - a hand w/all the knuckles - from the diamond lath. I couldn't believe it!!!!!!!...See MoreJoaniepoanie
