Should the interior of white inset Shaker style cabinets also be whit

We are in the middle of a whole house renovation that includes an entirely new kitchen. Our cabinets are inset Shaker style and will be painted white on site. They have been delivered. The exteriors are primed white already but the interiors are that finished wood look. I noticed that you can see the wood between the doors and the frames when the doors are closed? Is this normal or are our $50,000 cabinets not made as well as they should have been?

The interiors of my Shaker cabinets are natural finished wood, however all the front edges of the boxes and shelves are white. I think that's pretty typical. In less expensive cabinets like mine, the edge color is often achieved with an iron-on strip of veneer.

If you have any cabinets with glass doors, they should be all while on the interior.

Why are your cabinets being painted on site? Especially for that price? They should have been painted with a catalyzed conversion finish at the factory for the best long term results.

Beautiful! Your cabinets are gorgeous, the stain is perfect. I never thought of using tile - your travertine counters add such warmth and character to the kitchen. I really love the look and wish I had considered it for my own kitchen. You should post your kitchen on the discussions side, there aren't very many wood (non-white) kitchens being posted these days.

I paid an up charge to have the 2.25" rails/stiles for the shaker door style I picked. The shaker door style I have has solid wood rails/stiles with plywood middle panel, it comes standard with 2.75" rails/stiles, the all solid wood version comes standard with thinner rails/stiles. It was still cheaper for me to pay the up charge for the plywood middle panel as that's the only different between two versions. The KD did told me ahead of time that the top drawers will have even thinner rails since I picked out the 5 pcs construction and I was ok with that. For the other drawer that can accommodate 2.25" rails have 2.25 rails. Only the top drawer has a reduced rails. I have attached a picture of my coffee counter that shows two doors and a top drawer with thinner rails. I haven't take any pictures after the kitchen is completed as now I am trying to get my cooktop repaired and have set up a temporary portable unit there so it's not good for pictures taking. I think you should go for them- they are beautiful and unique. I am a firm believer in doing something fun for pulls. When I'm in a kitchen that does fun pulls, it personalizes it a bit more. I'm not sure why your kitchen is considered Victorian (I mean this in the humblest way, I trust it is considered that, but just in my ignorance of current kitchen style wouldn't have categorized in that way) but that style of pull would definitely fit with shaker style. It wouldn't fit with 1930's style which was more stream-lined and art deco. If you wanted to do that, although I know you don't like them, I would do green glass pulls (you can actually do green glass handle pulls too). The link below is to a kitchen that has similar cabinets and counter top and goes 30's. If you were going Victorian, I actually think the style would work with it, while it wouldn't be considered high Victorian, remember Victorian style spanned a long time and includes arts and crafts and eastlake is part of this category. Also remember, if you look historically, the Victorians didn't paint much of anything white- they couldn't get a real white color, it was more brownish because they used Linseed oil as a mixer- so again, go with what you love and don't fret about matching. It's impossible to do accurately. Yeesh sorry for the mini-history shpeil (speil? speel?) but that's one of my favorite parts of decorating. Inset describes the door type. According to the attached article door style refers to the type of panel, they refer to 4 basic types including recessed which can be called Shaker among other things. What may impact the price is the method of construction - how the frame is joined and the material in the recessed panel and how it is finished. My understanding is that you want the recessed panel to be finished before assembly (at least partially) so if there is movement in the frame what gets exposed will be finished. I am under the impression that it is better if the recessed panel is either MDF for a painted finish or veneer over plywood\MDF for a stained finish (this will also provide a more uniform appearance on the panel) as this will usually mean the door will contract or expand less in its' frame than if the centre panel is made of solid wood. If doing a painted finish you could go to a solid MDF door which can be routered out to look like a recessed panel but be one solid piece that is not subject to the natural movement of wood (MDF is more dimensionally stable than solid wood). My Mom went with a thermofoil finish over a solid MDF door - one of the characteristics of an MDF solid door is rounded interior corners - the routered groove in this particular company's product helps visually disguise it but if you look closely you can see the corners are all rounded. Better cabinet brands will give you several choices, at different price points, for the interior finishes. A good KD will show and explain the choices available in their cabinet lines.

I used Wood-mode and was given a choice on how I wanted the inside of my cabinets and drawers finished. I went with dark stained mahogany for the drawer interior to match the mahogany exterior. It looks really nice when the inside of the drawer matches the outside.

Did your KD have a showroom with samples and displays of all the different options?

I hope you are not in CA, because that on site paint job will be nowhere as durable as a factory paint job, specially as CA has banned many of the chemicals/additives that make paint durable.

A natural wood veneer interior or a natural wood looking vinyl/melamine interior is what 98% of American framed cabinetry has as a standard. Bookcases and Cabinets with glass doors will usually have a finished interior. I have seen very few kitchens with all finished interiors in my 54 years. It can be done in some semi-custom lines and custom lines, but is not standard, nor is it generally even discussed in the planning phases. It's so cost prohibitive, most people would not pay extra for it. Expect 20-30% more. Once your countertops go in, I bet you won't see the wood.

I agree...the bottom frame bit should be white like the top framed bit. Otherwise, the interior of that cabinet is pretty great and I woudn't want the whole thing painted.
