planting bare root fruit trees in winter?

I ordered two columnar apples from Gurneys (I know, I know. prob a bad choice) to replace one of mine from Stark that didn't survive (stark is out) and I got an email that they shipped yesterday. In February zone 5! Yikes! I was able to dig holes today, as the place they are going is a really sunny location and amazingly was not frozen. Do you think its okay to plant them outside and just mulch them heavy? Should I try to pot them up and keep them in the garage?
