Help with floor color

Hello - I‘ve been looking for months for a tile that will match my kitchen. The white is sort of an ivory and I had my heart set on marble look polished tile but every tile I chose was way too blue - I have a skylight directly over the kitchen. This tile will butt up to grey oak wood floors in the living room and light grey large hexagon tile with white grout in the powder room. Do you think any of the below work? I really don’t but I think maybe the existing honey oak is throwing me off. I was going to put matching wood on the kitchen and It looked silvery and bad.

Have you checked the wet COF for each of these? Please don't select one that is low - that's the coefficient of friction and you want something that isn't going to be slick when there are water drops and splashes on it.

Also consider the color of grout you would need with each of these - kitchens are messier places and do you really want to be cursing under your breath at having chosen a white/light grout?

Can you photograph the options laid adjacent to the floors they will butt up against? That should also be taken into account, not just how they look against your cabinets and wall color.

Hi Michelle - I actually don’t have the samples anymore but here is a pic of both floors. And thank you for the advice!!! I dont want slippery and I def don’t want white grout but it is white in the powder room and it might look better matched - it is a nightmare!!

I don't love either of your samples. I would also never make a selection based on that tiny sample. Bring more samples home. Once you have narrowed it down to 2 colors, you should then order a box of each and lay them out in your home. Your flooring supplier should place a hold on enough flooring from each color, so that when you pick the box you like best, you are actually getting the same lot # for the whole order. Yes, you won't be able to return the box you rejected, but that is a small cost, compared to ordering and installing a whole house of new floors and realizing that you hate it and it looked nothing like the tiny sample you had used to pick the floor.

Without seeing a layout drawing on how these spaces connect or flow together, perhaps you need to consider how the different floorings will connect if not the same height. Only saying because I hate the look of having transition pieces in open spaces that should flow together easily. Looks like your den, breakfast nook and kitchen all run together so these should probably be the same floor choice. Suggest you consider not having the cabinets control your flooring choice, with the idea you could save to have them painted later. Your furniture colors are beautiful and will be easy to coordinate accent colors, rugs, etc. later so I wouldn't worry about those so much. Flooring should enhance the permanent things in the spaces and blend with furniture, Before the new flooring is installed, consider removing all the wallpaper and borders and prime those walls. It will help you reimagine and see your wall and trim paint samples better to select those colors last.

It isn't about how much lighter or darker the floor is, but you need to get the right undertones, so the floors and existing trim/woodwork complement each other. Going darker or lighter than wood work is personal preference and finding the best look for the space, so don't get swayed by other people's personal preference. I have had wood floors that matched my cabinets and wood floors that contrasted ... just different choices in different spaces. Are you on a slab or basement? If you can do site finished wood floors, you will have a lot more options for staining the floors in the best stain color to go with your woodwork.

I voted for the last option! However, I would like to know what type of countertops you have. Also is your cutting board built into the counter?

Hi Amariet! The kitchen is dolomite. I was told it was quartzite but I have that in my bathroom and the kitchen is way softer. I have dinged it up a bit due to washing pots/pans and I left a few strawberries on the counter and it etched. The good thing is that it’s not noticeable at all and both can be fixed because it’s natural stone. I bought the cutting board off Amazon bc it had a lip that covers the edge - I hit it a few times loading the dishwasher! Even though it is a bit high maintenance (unlike the quartzite in the bathroom that can take about anything you give it), I would do it again in a heartbeat. The depth and beauty of the stone just amazes me - photos don’t do it justice. I’ll post some pics.

Hi Rantontoo - unfortunately I returned the samples. Not very smart of me!! Sorry! If you have any ideas of what you think would look good, I’d love to hear! :) I was even thinking maybe a dark slate...but I do like lighter colors. I found a marble on I love but it’s a stretched hex, I’ve been trying to post a pic but Houzz site is not cooperating tonight! I appreciate your input so much, thank you!!

Ok-edit, got the pic to load. too busy? I love both tiles, not sure together though.
