A rotten year for roses?
Comments (24)A rotten year here, too, for anything sensitive. All of last year's marginals either died in our extra bad winter or succumbed to the heat this summer. New bands with tender roots also succumbed to the heat. I've watered more this year but obviously not enough. I've never had a problem before; if I plant these "premature" babies in spring, they survive, tho it usually takes them an extra year to really get going. Bands with good roots that went in early have done fine, however, and my established roses have done well. Few jap beetles and too hot for much blackspot....See MoreMystery Plant from a swap a couple years ago?
Comments (1)Ooh it's one of my favorites. I also got one from a recent swap (last fall or last spring). Mine has been blooming a lot even though it's still a tiny plant. Stapelia also known as Carrion Flower because the flower odor attracts flies. To me they smell like compost or the rich soil in a forest but at times I get a whif of something stinky. I have no idea who is bringing them to the swaps but I'm glad I got one. Back when I lived in OK I planted some at the base of a mimosa tree and by the end of summer it had made a large mound - I was giving it away to anyone that came by....See MorePics of a couple of my gardens this year.
Comments (12)Thank you everyone. Gesila: The flowers are heirloom climbing roses. I'm sorry I couldn't tell you their names. They were given to me by a friend. They are very easy care. I don't really do anything to the, but trim every year. I have several of the same ones on our property. They are very prolific. And, yes, Linda that is a Liberty. It is the fourth one down on the right of the path in the first picture....See MoreExterior Paint - a couple years off, but planning now
Comments (0)My house really needs to be painted, but there were a couple of other projects that were immediate - i.e. garage concrete. I plan on having the budget for it in the next 2 years. I know this isn't the best angle, but here is the house: There are many, many houses of this style in my area, so I have been looking at them as I drive around, and I think the most attractive color on them is either white or green. I live across from a field - an agricultural field - so in spring and fall, when the equipment is in the fields, there is a cloud of dirt and dust floating across the road, so I think the it would be better to paint something other than white, as it shows it's dirt too easily. When there is snow on the ground, it looks positively filthy. I have read about Cape Cods that the roof color is a major factor in choosing a paint color. Every green house I see of this style has brown shingles, and more of a cream-colored trim (which I really like). This house was shingled shortly before I moved in, and will not need to be for some time. I had been keeping my eye out for a similar house with black shingles like mine painted green, and couldn't find one, but the photo below popped up in my FB feed from a local realtor yesterday. I think it's "OK" and I could deal with it a few years until the house needed shingling, but definitely think a brown roof would look better. I have always wanted a yellow house with a red door =) but I definitely did not like the yellow with the black shingles from what I've seen so far. Thoughts on the green with black shingles? Am I thinking too much about the shingle color? Any other suggestions for a Cape Cod (no beige). This is my first house, and I'd also sort of like to make it my own and give it a new look, but I do think white looks good, too....See Moremaire_cate
