Reupholstering a sectional sofa in faux or recycled leather

I have a 10-year old sectional sofa that is of reasonably high quality that I am considering replacing the original microfiber fabric with more pet-friendly recycled leather. It's pricey for sure, about $3000 for materials+labor (vs. about $6500 for a comparable new sectional in real leather). Wondering what experience people have with recycled leather, and whether "recycled" and "faux" leather are the same product? It's an awful lot of money and I am motivated in part by not wanting to put furniture that still has life in it into the landfill, but that is a hefty price tag and to spend that much, I want it looking better than new and much more durable, while not looking cheesy or cheap. The sectional is large - 101" L x 69" D for the chaise portion. (40 inches D for the sofa part) and seats 4-5 comfortably. Advice?
