People who have Ponds with Turtles
Comments (8)OK. My opinion only. We had a red eared slider for about 2 years and she took on a personality of her own. Made me and my family laugh with some of the mischief it would get into. My wife and 2 kids really liked her but this spring she left and never came back. Personally, I was thrilled. The reason is I built my pond in direct sun all day and wanted to grow water lilies and other "stuff". Almost impossible to do for me with a turtle and a Savio Skimmer. Either the few plants I had would end up in the skimmer daily from the turtle pushing it's way through the water or they would be eaten by the turtle. Either way, nothing would stay where you wanted it. Funny side note, about 3 months after the turtle left, another red-eared slider came wandering up the lawn towards the pond. It definitely wasn't the one we had for 2 years. Totally different look. My wife looked at me with love in her eye for the turtle and I said "NO WAY!". I picked it up and brought it down the street to a place called Butterfly Bogs and released it. Bottom line, if you are a control freak like I am, the turtle will win every time. -Mike Here is a link that might be useful:...See MoreA Tuff Straw Poll Question: Are There 2 Many 2 Similar Hostas ?s
Comments (24)My answer is yes, there are too many lookalikes. I was all set to blame the hosta registrar for all the duplicates. As I understand it, a hosta is supposed to be unique to be registered. However, I did not find where it said that on the registrar's website. It looks like you just send in your completed form, $5.00 and a photo of a mature clump and you're in business. But, registration isn't necessary to sell you product commercially. Neither Dream Queen or Thunderbolt is registered. I bought Dream Queen at a local nursery. Also, Paula bought Sun Hosta at Walmart. It is not registered, but is patented. It's supposed to be a sport of So Sweet. It looks exactly like So Sweet to me. It does really well in the heat, though, as does So Sweet. Looks like free enterprise to me. After looking around, it doesn't appear that things won't change. They're going to keep finding sports in tissue culture. Most of the TC people have access to the growers or are the growers, so they'll keep pushing the new ones out there, even if they are not as good as the oldies. The hybridizers will keep dabbing pollen, looking for the perfect hosta. The casual hosta grower like me will find a new sport once in a while. We will keep getting new hosta and the old ones will continue to go away. I used to grow African Violets. One of the really popular ones at the time was Tommie Lou. It was a plain dark green leaf with white speckles and white double flowers, if I remember correctly. You can't buy it anymore. We're people. We're fickle. We crave recognition. We enjoy achievement. There will be more lookalikes. bkay...See MoreThose of you who have your main sink in your island?
Comments (20)Another issue I see with your floor plan is that your access to the back yard through the sliding glass door is very round about from the kitchen. I would try to create an L shaped kitchen with a smaller island so that you have more direct access to the back yard if you will be using the back yard alot. I think if you swap the closet and walk in pantry, you can have an L shaped kitchen.... Another "traffic jam" as you have drawn floor plan is the size of the living room furniture. You have blocked the person into the sitting area. You need to lay it out with smaller pieces of furniture so that people can walk out of the sitting area around both pieces of furniture. Again, this is how you psychologically create spaciousness if you are not building a huge house. You need to use furniture that is scaled right for the room. I think smaller L shaped couch may be a better option for you. When smaller houses are not laid out well, they feel cramped. If you pay attention to how they work, then they can live large. In smaller houses, it is more important to feel that walkways are adequate and traffic flows are not dead ended. You have very generous hallways, ie 5 ft. You need to creat similar spaciousness elsewhere by paying attention to traffic flow. If you have already thought through, then never mind. Good luck....See More2-Island Kitchen Design Help Please
Comments (14)I'm offering some incremental improvements. Not sure the overall design is the right one yet but maybe some of these ideas will help. Agree the breakfast nook is too small for a family of 5-6 people (especially once they are all teenagers) unless you really want it to become more like a coffee nook that the family would never eat at. Just like on an airplane no one likes the middle seat so I wouldn't plan that for everyday use. I do like the new mudroom and powder room layouts better from the inside although I'd want to think about what it looks like from the outside with respect to roof lines and views. The popout for the powder does look like it was added on as a quick afterthought and is not integrated into the overall exterior design. I'm OK with two islands in a large space like yours but I would not want the cleanup area front and center. Cleanup is noisy and ugly business. I'd put a large prep sink to one side of the outer island and the cleanup sink/DW on the inner island. Sounds like you agree. Also if you are entertaining that many people frequently will you be satisfied with a single oven and a 4 or 5 burner 30" range? Seems like you would want at least two ovens plus a microwave and to have a little more space with a 36" cooktop/rangetop. To be honest I would take care of functionality matters to accommodate a large family like yours like this before I spent the money on the second island which is purely aesthetics (no one "needs" two islands). If its a budget issue I'd just design into the plan the possibility of adding the outer island later but get the wall and inner island right....See Moretraci_from_seattle
