Warm season grass weed killer

I know there are many weed killers out there but I am looking for a granular weed killer to kill dandelion, spurge, sedge and I’m sure many others.. but it has to be able to be used on St Augustine and centipede grass.
I see many that say it will work in every type of grass but last time I used Spectracide St Augustine / centipede grass spray, and I had no weed help and a few dead patches. And I know I kept to their specifics.

If anyone has any personal experience with this I would appreciate help. To be clear though, I do not want any fertilizer in this, I want solely weed killer.

Granular weed killers have problems with leeching into the soil and lower water systems.

As far as killing all weeds in St Aug and centipede, I believe all the herbicide companies make something with atrazine in it. Here's a (blurry) picture of one of them.

Generally they all have some purple on the label, but read the label first. And read the spray instructions 3x before you use it. I would walk backwards and spray downwind to keep the spray off of me. This stuff works fairly slowly, but it works on grassy weeds and broadleaf but leaves the st Aug and centipede alone. In about 3 weeks after you spray you'll suddenly remember that you sprayed it because the lawn will be weed free.

As for timing, normally I would suggest spraying in mid April, but... We are fully into spring here in the Texas Hill Country. Normal spring for us is in March, but I have some St Augustine awakening. Wild flowers are a full month early. You can spray the atrazine anytime the weeds are active, but the label recommends only once or twice (at most) a year. And normally I would say April and September, but this year it's going to be earlier.

Thank you for that comment. I actually used that last year, except I had very little results. I had a few dead patches too, but I used it per the instructions.. watched the rain and did that you had said and walked backwards. I thought maybe it was the active ingredient that didn’t help but maybe I was wrong.
I hear what your saying that a spray is better to catch on, I’m just worried about getting no results again.

I had found Spectracide granular that used 2-4d. I am in very sandy soil if that matters. I had thought that maybe the spray application just seeped right passed the roots due to the soil type. Does that make sense or does that not matter much?

What kind of grass are you growing if it is bermuda it's not a big deal, but if your growing a cool season grass with seed you will need to use some activated charcoal.

If the can was rinsed, it may not be a set back. If you'd realized the mistake immediately, watering with a hose, soft nozzle spray (which I would have been doing with a newly seeded lawn anyway) would have been all you could have done to try to remedy. Now, it's wait and see if you'll be reseeding. But I have to ask, why did you have Roundup in a watering can (and a leaking one at that), it's applied as a spray to foliage, not watered into the ground or poured on - should only be in spraying type container. Please don't rely on memory to mark your products or applicators. Get a can of spray paint, red for anything used for herbicides or blue for insecticides if you have those and in the future keep them separate. If you are using and mixing concentrates, it doesn't hurt to mark the product container too, some of these companies use same color/size bottles for everything and you can mix something other than you intended. Put a blotch of bright paint on any applicator or product that would be harmful - to you or your plants.

When should i use this product? I did buy this but I have Centipede / St Augustine and it is dormant right now. I have found weeds still coming out and would like to get them now, is that ok or should i wait until spring / summer ?

Yeah I had that happen to me a couple years ago with the over the counter weed b gone products..I never used them again and instead started buying the stuff the professionals use called Celcius..Its a little over $100 a bottle but a bottle goes a long way.(The application rate for 1,000 sq ft is alot cheaper than the bayer and weed b gon products you get at the box stores) .Celcius was designed for the heat for all the warm season grasses like bermuda, st Augustine, centipede and zoysia. But as far as your bermuda goes it will bounce back..It may take a few weeks in this heat we have here in georgia. Bermuda is the toughest grass out there.

If you still have the bottle, check to see if any of the product was dispensed. I've had two of those bottles come defective. I have one good bottle that I pour the product into when I want to spray.

Spray herbicides are only for foliar application. They do not work on the roots, so drenching the soil is a waste of product. Eventually the root will die, but that is due to absorption through the leaves.
