Help adding a coffee/bar station to my open dining area
I have been thinking about having a bar/coffee area built into an unused wall in my open dining area (or finding an appropriately sized piece of furniture that I could convert for this purpose) for a while but assumed that space constraints wouldn't allow. I'm currently redecorating the area and am wondering if there is a different table style that could make it work. I'm attaching photos of the area (the wall id like to use for the coffee station/bar has a large black frame on it) and is about 6.5 ft. The wall with the brass frames is 12.5 feet and there is just over 10 feet from the gallery wall to the kitchen island.
My questions are:
1. is there a way to fit what i want in without crowding the space too much?
2. i like the idea of a custom built unit as well as converting an older piece of furniture, but not sure what would work best style-wise in the space. I'm open to any and all ideas that would add some interest and warmth to the space
Excuse the empty frames and light fixture, like I said i'm in the middle of redecorating and waiting on a new light and photos for the frames.

Comments (47)Here is my first thought... Think about the floral chairs. You mentioned that you use tablecloths quite a bit. The floral pattern may limit using a pattered tablecloth - unless it's a stripe fabric. Something to consider... But I do like the chairs. I'm not crazy about using all upholstery, as in your second photo. Did you not like the silver tub chair from World Market? The only reason why I say this is because of the white chairs and white cabinet. If one is a brighter white, it may not look right. The metal is more like a neutral. Also - it looks like you have more red accents in your kitchen - the solid upholstered chair is more rust. Here is another patterned chair with more red tones: Also - when your guy makes the table, make sure he gives you enough overhang on each end (short ends) so you can get two chairs there if you want. Comments (26)I love the clean, uncluttered look of your home and you've made some great furniture choices. My first thought, though, is that I would try to rework the sofa/sectional placement. It really is unwelcoming looking to me to have the back where it is facing a wall, when it could be oriented to look into the room and out the windows. It seems like if it were placed in the corner under the stairs that it would feel open and invite you to come in and sit. I'd hate to be cooking in the kitchen and have the family or guests with their backs to me. If you are having a TV in another room close by, do you need one in that room, too? If, so placing a 70" unit will probably only work as you have it. But, to me, it's not going to look like a living room but more like a movie theater, which is fine if that's what you're going for. It seems like it won't be a cozy conversation area, though. I might actually flip the rooms and put the dining room where you have the sofa now. I was looking at lights used with dining rooms and ghost chairs and saw this, maybe would work in the living room? Kind of fun. don't know if it would look as good without the colored walls though. Comments (43)So part of the appeal of RH style for me is they incorporate rustic, organic, industrial, or antique elements into a space that is mostly monochromatic but full of textures. Some characteristics of their style are oversized pieces, as large as the space allows. Large artwork over the sofa, often in black or white or an abstract. The largest rug the living room can hold. Statement light fixtures in every room. Natural fibers and neutral tones. Decorative elements that are large but fewer of them on display, often incorporating wood or metal. 5 years agoIt's hard to tell without room dimensions being marked on your overview layout. I see the table dimensions, which make it look like the ends of the table are each about 30" from the wall. But the space looks different in the photos, which could be due to the angle.
If you're willing to have something custom built, I'd measure the space where the wall is next to your refrigerator and consider removing that stub wall and replacing it with a cabinet that opens out toward the dining space. How much room is there b/w the ref and the window? If your picture is to scale you either have very thick walls or a very shallow counter. :)
Assuming there is enough room, you'd have to be very careful that whatever you put there allows the ref door to swing open fully, and also that the doors on the cabinet don't hit your window. You could have something with a tambour door or bifold doors for the coffee bar area, regular cabinet doors above, and regular doors or drawers below. You already have electrical near there for the ref so that's a plus.

5 years agochicagoans that is a great idea, but we actually ended up putting a tall pantry cabinet next to the refrigerator in the end, I didn't realize that was an older version of the plan. Now there is not much space between the window and the end of the cabinets. Heres a view from a few weeks back before I started redecorating:

5 years agothis is also an idea i saw and liked (no coffee station, just bar type storage) we have lovely wine glasses that sit in a kitchen cabinet that I feel could be used for something more practical. I was envisioning a very shallow table underneath.
