Normally I'd say panels just at the ends, but this is such a huge expanse... I think I would treat each pair of windows as one - panel on left end, panel in middle (b/w 2nd and 3rd window), and panel on right end. (To get the right fullness, you might need to sew 2 panels together, particularly for the outside panels.) If you do that, I think you'll also want the romans to treat each pair as one, which I don't think will be possible on your windows with inside mount but would be easy with outside mount. If you can't get a single roman wide enough for each pair of windows, you can either put two shades on one rail or simply butt the shades up next to each other. The windows in this picture aren't the same as yours, but I hope you can see what I mean about the romans covering both windows. ETA: if you really want the illusion of two pairs of wide windows, you could trim out each pair like the windows on the right in my second image. Tibbrix, I love the idea of painting the ceiling in the DR. A new chandy is probably 6 months out unfortunately. I have to do my re-designs in small doses so either hubby doesn't notice or not overwhelmed with my expenses! As far as the rod height, I see what you are saying but my ceiling are only 8 ft and I think going lower makes them seem lower. In my eat in kitchen I originally had panels hung right at the window trim and then raised it to the crown, looks so much better. Jeannie, yes I was planning on getting thicker rods, probably wood rods. I threw these panels up when we bought the house as they were fairly inexpensive and I could not spend a lot on window treatments at the time. We were in the midst of a nearly full house remodel and finishing touches was just not in the budget. Now I am focusing on the small things. I think my plan is to do the plantation shutter and then either the RH panels or something similar. I like the idea of going lighter. Everyone is so helpful, I really appreciate the ideas/insight!

Suzan - THanks for the picture - the only reason why I don't want to put the bed in front of the window is - I have a very, very limited view from any of my windows. So I am using my small side yard as my yard. So I will have flowers, a pond, etc. and I want to be able to see if from my bedroom and my headboard is solid and very high. Sujarf - I don't mind having a nightstand in front of the window but I do mind that I won't be able to use outside mount drapes or my current drapes unless I find some sort of solution - Would it bother you to have 1 room with smaller casing than other rooms. If I make the casing smaller it will help alittle bit. Would 2 1/2 window casing look ok with a 5 inch baseboard? Downsizing is very hard to do...

I'd just do the subways and have a very skinny cut row under the sill. It will be almost invisible, but consistent and look right where the row leaves the window and continues full sized. The row of 4x4s wouldn't be good. And yep, changing the window trim is also an option (or adding a bit of additional molding under the sill).
