Over the range microwave venting capabilities?
Comments (3)Most have an optional charcoal filter that you can use if you choose the recirculation installation. In the OTR microwave we just installed, it came out of the box ready to vent out the back (for a vented application), but we had to open it up and rotate the fan so it would recirculate instead. An easy method to make sure you are getting one that can vent properly for your application is to check out the unit's dimension guide on ajmadison's website. If you see one that says "Convertible to recirculating", it likely comes ready to vent outside unless you switch the fan. As for your other question, the fan function is separate from the microwave. Just like the light function is separate. There are generally microwave controls, then under that pad you will see the buttons for the fan & light....See Moreinformation about effectiveness of venting over the range microwave?
Comments (10)I live in a townhouse also, and was unable to vent to the facade. The code here is your vent cannot be within 10' of an adjacent house, or 5' of any operable window. (which makes perfect sense.) That condition does not exist on the front of the house. So I ended up with a recirculating OTR microwave. I will be interested if you are allowed to do it and what you end up with. There are certainly some houses around here with vents that don't meet the strict criteria. Code interpretation and enforcement is definitely variable. The OTR microwave is pretty useless as ventilation. I typically open a window. Given the restrictions, I'm still happy with it since I couldn't vent outside anyway....See MoreOver-the-range microwave *not* over a range
Comments (27)I'm surprised by your comment about microwaves with trim kits looking gaudy. I've never seen one that looked terrible. Many companies sell them and they go hand in hand with specific models of microwaves so that it is a custom looking fit made to fit into a standard size opening (24", 28", 30"). GE, LG, Panasonic etc - they all seem to have them. Have a look and see if you can't find one that suits your fancy. They aren't expensive ($70-$120) for most that I've looked at and give a really nice finished appearance. Another option is the microwave drawer - the most common one is made by Sharp. I think they look great and many people like them at the lower level. That way, especially as you age you aren't lifting hot items down towards you, rather up onto counter level from the drawer. They are not an inexpensive item but look and function well and can be quite hidden if you put them on the backside of an island configuration....See MoreBest VENTING over the range microwave
Comments (2)It is possible no one here maintains a list of claimed air flow rates vs. various microwave oven products. However, such data should be available on-line where you might be able to find it by searching manufacturer websites, or even A.J. Madison product listings. Flow rate will be inadequate due to the constraints of actually performing an oven function in a space that should be a hood function. If I were stuck with this dilemma and abjured suicide, I would put an auxiliary blower on the outside wall to aid the hopeless blower that will be the only type that is likely to fit in the spare space of the microwave oven. You would need to add a wall switch (or rotary motor power control) for it because integration into the microwave oven fan power circuit might not be a good idea for most. kas...See MoreShannon_WI
