Paperwhites Won't Bloom -What To Do About Them
Comments (4)mbluetyphoon, You have classic case of overcrowding, to shallow and undernourished. If bulbs are left in one place long enough, they will continue to multiply and literally push out of the ground. Additionally, bulbs are heavy feeders during their storage season, when they bulk up and store nutrients for the coming season (immediately after bloom). I strongly recommend that you lift and seperate the bulbs (you'll have a lot to give away). Once lifted, you should incorporate a lot of compost into the area and dig it in deeply (preferably a foot or so). Replant the bulbs, mulch and water thoroughly. The bulbs will probably bloom this year after thinning and resetting (mine did). After this, if you will make it a habit to lift the bulbs, seperate them and rejuvenate the beds about every three years, fertilize with a good quality slow-release fertilizer after blooming ceases and keep them watered (not wet) during the growing season, you will avoid this issue later. Hope this helps and I found some great information about this and other stuff at the link below, as well as a pretty good newsletter. Comments (8)Flower: I forgot to mention the sweet Olive.... it is the best I just love it, I go out on my patio and front porch and have to smell it every time.. it is the most beautiful sweet scent of apricots, I have 4 that are blooming right now and it's so different from any other plant I ever smelled, I ordered a synthetic oil on ebay and put it all over my house on flat cotton wipes, I even put it in the vents of my heater, it is really nice. I have 4 michelia figos that all have buds on them, they smell like very sweet ripe bananas. I also love the smell of honeysuckle, I bought a couple six packs of ground cover honeysuckle and planted them in hanging pots near my patio door, I think it will be a wonderful waft when they all come into bloom. I can hardly wait to smell them, this is my first season with all my fragrant plants. If your just getting started on fragrant plants be careful it's very very addicting but fun!!!! My other most favorite is brugmansia (Angel Trumpet), they are absolutely THE BEST! The differnt colors vary in fragrance, some smell a strong honey vanilla, others smell like a sweet lemony citrus, and another smells like a white flower scent like jasmine with the honey also. They are wonderful only smell at night, I have about 7 now and growing more, the ones by my front door smell my whole living room up when the door is open on a warm evening. So..... enjoy!!!!!! P.S. brugmansia's are very easy to root from a cutting....just stick it in water for a few weeks and stick it in the ground, they grow like weeds....See MoreWell friends! It smells good in my room! Comments (27)Lot's of leaf loss here and out of bloom for a while now. I hate it that it won't rebloom until next year at this time. I think it's a lck of sunlight around my parts that causes the leaf loss..Oh well:-( Purple, I never heard of a town called Opp..Cool name! I thought that was the abbreviation for youur town.lol It sounds like a place where you can hear a swarm of bees from a mile away and the sounds of a hummin birds feathers flap as it drinks from your food source! What I would do without noise pollution and the every day cars backed up on the roads. To hear the frog peepers make their music on a first warm spring night. We use to until development took over. I once stayed at my sisters house which is a mile into the woods in the country. It was so dead silent there to sleep, that I could here buzzing noise in my ear all night. I never slept thatn night! A place where you can plant an Osmanthus in the ground and enjoy it's size for years to come! Mike...See MoreWhat is that wonderful smelling hedge called that is blooming now
Comments (4)Laurie, Thanks for your reply. That plant looks pretty similar but is not it. It does not have that many flowers in it's clumps and they are not bunched up together, but more spread out. By the look of the leaves, they could be related, but I know for sure that I have never seen it called "Osmanthus fragrans, commonly called sweet olive or tea olive." The leaves can also have a silver like look at least at this time of the year. It will bloom for a week or so. After going to your links I looked under scented hedges, white flowered hedges and other types for the gulf coast region and think I found it but the name still seemed different. But this site describes the plant "Eleagnus" very well.I forgot to mention that after the tiny white speckled flowers bloom there are brown football shaped fruit or seed? http://www.skinnernurseries.com/plants/Eleagnus.aspx Latin Name: Eleagnus x ebbingii Common Name: Eleagnus Family: Eleagnaccae Height: 15 Width: 15 Foliage: Light green above, metallic sheen below Form: Upright and open Texture: Medium Flower: Small, silver - white, early fall Fruit: Brown to red drupe, not significant Exposure: Sun - Partial Shade Growth Rate: Fast Salt Tolerance: Good Soil Conditions: Moist,Well Drained Hardiness Zones: 6,7,8,9 Pest/Diseases: None serious Cultivars: N/A Uses: Banks, hedges, highways, natural barriers...See MoreMaribeth z5 CO
