Oil vs. Water-Based finishes
Comments (14)I'm in the same boat here as far as having to choose between the two (oil/acid or water based). As part of a gut to the walls remodel, I'm having about 650 sq ft. of CVG fir floors installed. I've talked to my flooring installer at length about the relative pros/cons of the various finishes. The conclusion I've come to is that yes, durability can be equal or better with a water based finish, but depending on the wood, the look may or may not be what you want. The guy doing my floors is a one man operation, hard to get because he is so much in demand for the quality of work that he does. He told me that, at least for the fir that I'm doing, although the durability would probably be the same, I most likely would not be happy with the water based finish, even Bona Traffic. He said that for some woods it's great, but does not bring out the color like Glitza does, at least for the fir. We are going to do the first 2 coats with Glitza acid cure, then the top coat with Glitza's new water based finish. According to him, the new water based finish from Glitza is truly state of the art, the best there is at the moment. So, I'm going to sacrifice & find a place to stay for couple of days (with my two cats) while the initial two coates of Glitza acid cure is applied. We are then going to cover the floor with a felt cloth and masonite, finish the rest of the work on the house, then at the end, do the final finish coat with the new Glitza water based finish. I really want to bring out the best in this flooring. It is old growth, 200+ probably year old Doug fir, sold in a hazardous tree sale by the forest service. It was rough milled and stored for about the last 6 years. The material for my floor was hand picked, then sent the the mill and milled into flooring for my project. My interior doors, entrance door, and all of my base, case and window trim has all been custom milled from the same batch of wood, so I'm really excited to see it come together....See MorePainting Kitchen Cabinets - Cabinet Coat vs. Oil Based
Comments (4)Last week on Ask This Old House (the episode which played in my area, I mean) they helped a homeowner paint her kitchen cabinets. The professional painter TOH brought in (one they've used on various projects) said he recommends against using oil-based in a kitchen for two reasons: 1) it yellows over time, and if you're going to spend a lot of time doing the prep and painting, you want your paint to stay true, and 2) the fumes are just too strong for a kitchen, a space which needs to be used sooner rather than later, and by various members of a family. He and the homeowner primed, used two - three coats of the (water-based) paint and then two coats of poly over. In our den we used (I mean, the painters used) Cabinet Coat on the cabinets, and it is different than "usual" paint. In our kitchen (on wainscoting) we used BM's (water-based) Impervo and honestly, I like its finish better than the Cabinet Coat. They've both stood up beautifully, although in all fairness the Impervo gets much more of a workout than the CC (I've four and two year-olds) and we scrub it on a frequent basis. No burnishing, no color wiping up. It's really great. Over neither did we put poly. Do check the Painting Forum -- there are so many smart and generous people there. Good luck with your project!...See MoreCabinet Coat vs. Oil Based for kitchen cabinets
Comments (5)I am a total novice and just bought a quart of CC to try out b/c I too was afraid of it after hearing that it is hard to work with. Big mistake! I should have just bought the gallon. I LOVE how it goes on and how it levels. I got the high quality Corona brushes so maybe that has something to do with it but I swear it goes on easier than anything else I've applied and levels beautifully when dry. I have not applied it to vertical surfaces yet, just to my doors while laying flat -the doors, that is ;) Hopefully I won't have any trouble with the vertical parts. My Paint store was able to tint it to match the Ben Moore Paintcolor White Sand. I was pleasantly surprised b/c I thought I read that it only comes in white or off white. Good luck!...See MoreOil Based Primer-Water Based Paint on Cabinets?
Comments (3)Yes it will work just fine. Primer is primer, whether it's acrylic or oil, both are formulated to accept either topcoat. Michael...See Morebry911
