Cabinet Coat vs. Oil Based for kitchen cabinets

(This is a cross-post from the kitchen forum. I realized this might be a better place for my question.)

Sorry, I know the question of which paint to use on kitchen cabinets has been raised here a million times. And I've poured through all the past messages. But I still feel a bit confused and overwhelmed. It looks like the most-suggested products are SW Pro-Classic and BM Satin Impervo, both oil-based, OR Insl-x Cabinet Coat acrylic.

Can anyone out there who has worked with both oil-based and Cabinet Coat explain to me the pros and cons of each and which might be a better product for me personally?

My cabinets are 25-year-old stained maple, raised panel... and I want them a soft white. I am a novice painter and have never worked with oil-based paint. I am prepared to take my time with this project. I want them to look good but am not expecting perfection.

SW Pro Classic and BM Satin Impervo are also available in 100% acrylic paints.

If you have access to Cabinet Coat, I recommend that product. Follow directions for a successful job.

Thanks, Michael. Then what are your thoughts on using the acrylic BM Satin Impervo for my cabinets? Would the outcome be that different from the Cabinet Coat? I'm worried b/c I've read that CC can be difficult to work with. Do you think first-time users can get the hang of it quickly? Maybe I should get a gallon of both and do some testing ...

Dulamel is a good wearing product, wouldn't count on painting shelves with it and moving in the next day though. Terms pecat lacquer and catalyzed finish and conversion varnish are used somewhat interchangably. What it means is there is "catalyst" added to the finish to speed drying and promote hardness. The base could be urathane or lacquer though not likely because of regs on true lacquer. It's a two part process the base + catalyst. Think epoxy - resin + hardener.

I plan to paint kitchen cabinets with white FPE eco on my painted cabinets. The cabinets have white color oil-based paint on them from the previous owner. Any recommendations on primer? FPEeco is a modified oil paint which is water thinnable (I don't really know what all that means...lol... extra info) I plan to clean, sand, wipe, prime then add a coat of paint. Should I do a second coat of paint? Some recommend just one coat with oil based paints. I'm worried that primer and 2 coats of paint on previously-painted cabinets will add so much added dimension that the doors will not close without being remilled. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance! We had ours done a year ago. I had them brushed with oil base BM as I wanted the historic look of the brush in the paint. It is very subtle. I love the way they came out and they have held up great so far, I just wipe them with a dishcloth and soapy water. Hope this helps, caroline

Be aware that if you're painting it white, oil based paint will yellow over time. Just curious - why you are using oil base paint?

I am a total novice and just bought a quart of CC to try out b/c I too was afraid of it after hearing that it is hard to work with. Big mistake! I should have just bought the gallon. I LOVE how it goes on and how it levels. I got the high quality Corona brushes so maybe that has something to do with it but I swear it goes on easier than anything else I've applied and levels beautifully when dry. I have not applied it to vertical surfaces yet, just to my doors while laying flat -the doors, that is ;) Hopefully I won't have any trouble with the vertical parts. My Paint store was able to tint it to match the Ben Moore Paintcolor White Sand. I was pleasantly surprised b/c I thought I read that it only comes in white or off white. Good luck!

Muralo Ultra waterbourne would be a good pick also.

Oils will dry harder and thus be more durable but they will yellow - sometimes badly - so if you are looking at white, acrylics are the way to go. You will find that you will go through a learning curve for any waterborne enamel, especially if it's low VOC. BM's WSI, CC (a BM company BTW)and SW PC are all fine choices - but they each handle differently.
