Living room with high ceiling and wierd layout - decor ideas?
Comments (11)You're correct that this is a challenging design. Here are some possible solutions. You seem open to replacing your furniture, so that is my first thought: --Replace both sofas with comfortable armchairs with tallish backs that can be floated in the middle of the room around a coffee table. This will greatly add flow around the room so that you're not blocking all the inconvenient doorways. Note how a dramatic light pendant centers the seating. With the height you have, a beautiful pendant would have an incredible effect in both lighting the room and bringing down the scale to a more comfortable height. You have warm, wood floors in a beautiful color. Have a wooden bookcase in the same finish built to the left of your fireplace that can accommodate your TV. Have it built to the height of your mantel. Alternatively, get a very wide console, not too deep, for the TV. The one you have is too small and doesn't link in any way to the finishes in the room. Get an oversized large square or round rug for the room in a pattern that picks up the warmth of your wood finishes and echoes whatever upholstery you eventually choose for your seating. All art work should be hung at eye level regardless of how high your ceilings are. That means the center of each piece should be around 57" from the floor to the center of the art. Pair your daughter's paintings side by side at eye level. Lower the art work over the mantel so it's about 6" from the mantel so they connect. If you love that piece, or your daughter's art, then choose your future furniture palette--upholstery, pillows, etc. from the art. (This chair is the same silvery blue as in your painting. The legs are in similar wood finish as your wood floors and trim. Four similar ones--or these--around a round coffee table would look wonderful and really function well in the room....See Morefurniture layout and decorating ideas awkward E-I-Kitchen to living
Comments (2)What is your decor style? Are you keeping the wall color? What is your budget? The blank palette is actually a gift. You won't have to undo or make do with someone else's choices or mistakes. I would definitely put some large rugs on your list to help define your spaces. Properly hung curtain panels will also warm up the rooms and ground them. The kitchen lighting looks blah, I would definitely replace them. Keep in mind that the house is filled with warm tones so greys and cool colors, although popular, will be hard to work into the space....See MoreOdd shaped living room layout/decor
Comments (2)Don't know what the heck those numbers mean on the floor plan. You'll probably have to "float" the seating arrangement in the middle of the room. A couch will be in the middle, with the back of it hugging the straight dash line. To either side of it (allowing of course for room to get around), will be an upholstered chair. Add curtains, side tables, art, rug etc. See if you can get local art. Art is a very personal thing. Take your time and get pieces you love. Carefully consider the amount of space you have to move around. I personally like more space than stuff, but that's me. How many people do you usually have sitting in this room? If you entertain a lot, consider additional seating with poofs and/or mini ottomans that people can sit on. Another option for extra seating is putting slightly upholstered straight back chairs in the corner for company. I'm personally not keen on Bobs furniture - I'm just giving you a general idea. Measure twice, buy once! https://www.mybobs.com/furniture/living-room/chairs/p/20061608001 In my opinion, gray is kind of trendy. You may want to think of a more classic color. Sherwin WIlliams is my fav, but there are a lot of paint companies out there. https://www.sherwin-williams.com/homeowners/color/find-and-explore-colors/paint-colors-by-family#/active/color-wall/section/sherwin-williams-colors Sherwin Williams has brochures in their stores that show how to coordinate everything in a room with a certain color. I worked in customer service for many years. If you get a nt so helpful person - ask for someone else or go to a different store. In my opinion, there's no excuse for bad customer service....See MoreDecorating layout / Kitchen / Living room
Comments (8)the entry with connection between "rooms " and great room behind garage is a passage zone. I wouldn't try to coddle the space as in making it a destination. If the stools at island are well utilized, at most I'd put a windsor chair or the like in the corner near the fireplace and call it a day. What I would measure out and explore is getting a closet behind that front door on the bit of wall if possible....maybe a long bench under front window w storage underneath or something like that /maybe a long narrow table with baskets underneath . Or maybe a bench ,similar, to left of fireplace. These are spots to set things down, drop gloves scarfs bags, keys etc.......I'd use the long windowless wall w garage door [in family room] for a drop leaf table/expandable...for seating two or three people w capacity to expand when you need it. The rest of the room should accomodate your preference whether sectional? couch and two club chairs? TV viewing? etc. Spaces evolve as you use them. But some closet or equivalent/bench/hooks etc as mentionned in the front zone seems like a need if I were prioritizing things. Then again, I live in 4 season climate zone and accesories that people need are always changing and expanding /contracting in mass/volume and required space to store or set down....See Moredecoenthusiaste
