Completed our Master Bath
Comments (13)Thank you for sharing your experience, Annaleef, It is very comforting to know I am not alone to be travelling along the One-Thousand-Tiny-Decisions-a-Day path to glory. We also had a sconce moment. A bar it is, but it faces downward (or will be, eventually, one day, over the rainbow....) Catching potential snafus last minute. Oh boy, don't I know that feeling well! Insanely thrilling, isn't it (says she, involuntarily jerking convulsively...)... ? Our project started out by demolishing the existing bathroom down to the studs and joists. A small narrow closet was sacrificed to the task, old wiring and insulation were replaced, and a proper fan (Panasonic) was installed. The only thing we kept is the window, but after seeing what you did with yours, I'm up here biting my thumb. Starting from scratch made the rebuilding simpler in the end. With the studs exposed, it was a cinch to rewire, create a wet wall, and insulate. We then cement boarded the wet wall, shower and bath area. After that, I plastered and painted the walls and ceiling, and the tub surround frame was built in. That is about when Christmas hit us in the face. While most people were shopping for Christmas presents, we were shopping for tiles. Somehow we found what we needed and hit the ground running on January 4th, thinking we'd be done in two, maybe three weeks. T'was not to be. First, the tiles we'd ordered because they were supposedly in stock turned out to be somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic and only expected in February, March really. So we had to scramble and find a replacement so we would not incur down time with our tile man who was coming in the following week. We managed, but then the granite could not be ordered because the furniture was not in. Turns out we needed the granite in order to lay the tiles. Who knew. And here we are. Maybe I'll be able to take my first shower of the year at Easter. It will makes my classic bathroom feel so much more authentically traditional! Comments (31)The shower door was installed yesterday. Here's a picture The door is on pivot hinges on the top & bottom. It can be open inward and just clears the rainshower head by 1/8" or so. Pure luck because I wasn't counting on that working so well. The advantage now is that we can put hooks for our towels underneath the window -- and still be able to reach them when we are done showering. If the door had to open outward, the towels would've been behind the shower door. There's really no other good place to put them and the plan was always for hooks under the window. I'm glad it worked out....See MorePolished or brushed nickel???
Comments (9)Chrome goes with everything and is easy to match with accessories. Also, the price difference really starts to add up for a master bath, when you consider sink(s, tub, shower. I just finished my master bath in the country and I went back and forth between chrome and nickel for a long time. I always use chrome but I thought that the more country look might demand a brushed nickel finish The price difference would have been 1,500 (all Kohler, using FaucetDirect, so very good pricing). My view is always, in for a penny, in for a pound, but I just couldn't justify the difference. The chrome looks gorgeous....See MorePolished or brushed nickel??? (cross posted in Bathrooms)
Comments (9)We did our faucets in chrome except for the cabinet latches, which weren't available in chrome so the cabinet guy substituted polished nickel. I think PN is gorgeous and I was tempted to go for it for all our fixtures but I am so glad I didn't...those stupid cabinet knobs tarnish if you so much as look at them the wrong way. I had to ask my husband to please be careful to only open them with clean dry hands (kind of annoying in a bathroom when you are applying makeup, lotion, etc.) I have heard there is a type of polish I can get to clean them up (brasstech is the name, I think) but I haven't ordered it yet. I need to do it though. If I had to do it over again, I would change the knob style before going with polished nickel -- I can see that they are going to be a serious maintenance headache over the years....See More- 5 years ago
