interesting thoughts about avsa/fc2 pics...
Comments (12)Molly, FC2 stands for First Class Version 2, a computer program with a database of 16598 (and growing) registered AVs. There are about 6,000 photos too. I got the program a few months ago. You can search for AVs with certain characteristics, upload your own info, print labels, and do other things, like drool over some very cool plants! The FC2 web site has a lengthy discussion about the lack of good quality photos, stating that a mediocre one is better than none at all. I agree: itÂs frustrating that over 10,000 hybrids donÂt have photos in the database. Good quality pictures are solicited! Complaining AV photography buffs can be part of the solution by submitting high quality pictures (of show plants, their own plants, and those of friends and club members) for inclusion in the database. The link below is the FC2 web site. The program may be purchased from the AVSA at http://www.avsa.org/Store/Books.html#First%20Class%20MVL%20Program Getting into AVs is forcing me to learn photography in order to share photos on forums like this one. The original poster said you could take 100 photos and at least one should come out right. That's a good description of my current skill level, so I sure won't be submitting any photos to FC2 real soon! Comments (8)weedmeister, you have it exactly backwards when you said "propane contains less energy per unit volume than natural gas". You can take comfort in knowing you're far from the first here to make the same mistake, though. Along with the others, I suspect you guess that because most cooktops suffer power loss in conversion to LPG, it just *must* be that the gas has lower energy content. In fact, LPG (mostly C3H8) is about two and a half times more dense than NG (mostly CH4) and has about two and a half times the energy content per unit volume: there's more there to burn. That's why burner orifices get *smaller* in conversion to LPG, you need *less* gas to mix with the air to get about the same BTU's. So why *do* burners lose power when converted to LPG? Not because of lower energy content but because manufacturers who decide they want to get by with just one basic burner design for both gases optimize their designs for the gas the vast majority of us burn: NG. As cpovey points out, it's perfectly possible to design a LPG burner for the same output and some manufacturers do just that. If most of us burned LPG, burner designs would all be optimized for LPG and it would be the NG users that needed to worry about BTU loss in conversion....See MoreStrange Thoughts about Bookcases
Comments (9)Annie, I pinned it and reposted the pic that way-- hopefully will stay put now! Yes, I agree that the narrowness is an issue. Unfortunately, I think the same of my own (too narrow) but it was the only one I could find that would fit my space and my $. As for adding trim and moulding-- yes, that is my plan, except that my bookcases are wood veneer, and not white. It seems everyone who adds trim and such are working with white. I guess it will just take finding the right stain to make it work, and getting real wood trim. I've been wanting to add doors, but this wouldn't work for my kids . . .the little ones need easy access to their books and doors + little fingers are a problem. Graywings, I will work on getting some up. Roarah, your photo is very inspiring. My setup is the same-- enough room for one bookcase on each side + a window. Are yours made entirely from scratch or did you "hack" ones you bought? I have also been thinking of putting a bench under my window. I also love the idea of putting something under the bookcase. That gives me more options if I find shorter but vintage or antique ones. Jakabedy, I fully agree that one bookcase is the problem. However, that is all I have room for as well-- as I said above, a wall of bookcases creates a different feeling. I only have room for one on each side. Peegee, that isn't my room. As I wrote above, my wall color is much darker and there is not much contrast between the bookcase and wall color. My books and such are already arranged so that not much is on top. These combined ideas have been very helpful. I will have to think about the "problem" more and come back with pics. Thanks so much!...See MoreMusings about thoughtful replies
Comments (42)Sasafras the times I remember certain members being called out by name is when they may have recently posted about the same type of situation or project or when the question has to do with a specific area of expertise. We all know my3dogs is the queen of Craigslist shopping and turning bargain, but unique, chairs into a work of art; Mz M is quite talented with her painted furniture projects; Bee is quite the tile expert; the list goes on and on with the helpful, talented people on here. That doesn't mean everyone else is chopped liver. I wouldn't hesitate a minute to call someone out by name if I was hoping for their specific assistance, and I wouldn't make a habit of it, but I would also welcome advice and guidance from others at the same time. That is just understood by most and everyone chimes in if they have something to offer....that's what makes it fun as well as helpful. When I get the time and energy, I am going to call Caroline (Trailrunner) out by name and ask how I can get physically fit and slim and trim at 61 :). And also, how to prepare some of her beautiful foods. Tuesday...See Moresandk
