Backsplash Yes/No? How?

Can't decide on how to put a backsplash on my new kitchen. How far I should go up or if I should just do a backsplash behind the cooktop to the top of ceiling? My windows and roof are making this decision tricky. Thanks!

I would suggest looking into doing a backsplash to the window sill and carries throughout, and do a stainless steel plate behind the range that goes all the way to where the hood starts

Anthony. Excuse my bad mark up. Its only 4 ish inches under the window sills. So do you think it should be that all the way around and then the stainless plate just under the range or all the way to the top? Thank you

It's funny, but we didn't choose our glass tile backsplash because it was popular, or even trendy (didn't realize it was!). It just "went" with our (contemporary) style and it worked beautifully with all the elements that made up our kitchen--our flat panel/slab door (light cherry) cabinets, our soft black granite, SS appliances and sink, and satin nickel, SS, and chrome accessories. It had a certain something that made it special, without overwhelming everything else we'd chosen, which is exactly what we'd wanted for our backsplash. In fact, when I first saw the sample boards in the store, I thought it had an almost retro, late 60's/70's mod look!

didn't have time to read all the answers. I have no backsplash and have never regretted it...been over 6 yrs. It is painted with BM matte...which has ceramic in it. It is as beautiful now as it was when first painted. I love the fact that I can showcase other things ...art etc in my kitchen and no competition. Also if I ever want to change it is as quick as a paint brush...expense is minimal..paint only ! All in all I think it is serene as you point out . Here is one pick. Since I have a lot of high heat cooking in my kitchen..built in deep fat fryer as well as gas cook top I can definitely speak to the longevity of paint only. c ( more at this album )

With the style of the cabinets, your bar light, and the country feel of your home, you could use a schoolhouse pendant. Pottery Barn's comes in 8" and 11" in a choice of color and a metal rod. Many companies make them however. It would be easy to keep clean too. PB schoolhouse pendant Have you considered an induction cooktop instead of gas?

No, the backsplash has a cool tone compared with the warm colors in the laminate counters. I would not invest in any type of backsplash, until I saved up enough to replace the counters. Maybe an inexpensive peel and stick backsplash to get by in the meantime (it looks like that's what's there now). I also would not put crown molding on the cabinets. It's an expense that wouldn't really add any value to the current kitchen. Just money spent.

I would actually take the backsplash up to the bottom of the hood, and then use that line to run the backsplash around to the other wall (all the way to the door and down that bit of wall next to where your cabinet ends). The down side to doing it this way is that it will involve a lot of cuts near the door. Your kitchen is gorgeous, and you already have so many lovely elements, so I would keep the backsplash simple. Perhaps a glass tile in a light neutral that goes with your counter, walls, and trim.

If you do not install a backsplash, be proficient in drywall repair and mold abatement.

Run the "backsplash" under both window sills and up to the vent hood, using the same material.

A few heights to consider:

I used backpainted glass because it's easier to install in Photoshop. I suppose I should have tried some colors before I cut the backsplash down. Hindsight...
