Hands-free opening for trash pull-out
Comments (48)Walt - I'll take some photos soon and post them. Holy grail, haha... yes, I agree. You know, I actually grew up with a trashcan with self-opening/closing lid, but can't find any mention of these online, not even a picture. Yet, back in the day in Switzerland, just about all trashcans functioned like this. Now the available systems are expensive and complicated, and demand exacting dimensions to function, not something I could possibly duplicate. The Swiss contraptions from the40s/50s and 60s relied on a very simple, adjustable and thus, foolproof idea. The trashcans sat in a holder on the inside of the under-sink cabinet door. When the door was opened, the can would swing out along with it, but the hinged lid was restrained by a thin adjustable chain from the back/top of the cab interior. The chain was attached so as to force the lid to rise up when opening and drop the lid shut again during closing. The chain length mattered, but could easily be adjusted. I adapted the idea to my Ikea trash pullout under the sink. So far, my set up is just temporary (the can is held in place with masking tape etc). I will rebuild with more permanent materials as soon as I find some time. In the meantime, we're enjoying my hands-free trash pullout....See Moreyep, another trash pullout question
Comments (6)I have the Hafele silver pedal opener--love it! It is harder to close the door (than it would be w/out the opener) because of the bungees, but I really like being able to open the trash cab without touching the handle with icky hands. Our cab installer kept playing around to get the door to close more flush with the adjacent cabs during our install. I called Hafele and was told to have our KD/cab guys contact them and they'd arrange to send their own tech out to take a look and make any necessary adjustments. I made the appt with an area rep who came along with the tech (who lives a few towns over from us). They were both as nice as could be, made a few simple adjustments (tightened some screws mostly) and left me their cards if we have need of their services in the future. I do find that if I don't close the door tightly (with a little force), it doesn't close as tightly/flush as I'd like. Then, I just pop it open, and close it again. We have a full height 24" wide door on our trash cab BTW. The only time I ever find the pedal opener to be annoying in the least, is if I'm cleaning up the kitchen, and end up closing and opening the door a million times because I keep thinking I've thrown out the last piece of garbage, but I keep coming across one more piece of trash to toss out!...See MoreBlum Servo-Drive in Kraftmaid Trash/Recycle Drawer?
Comments (17)Gaaa, another decision to make! I'm glad you posted for help, aek9y, because otherwise this detail might have slipped by me. Is the Double Electric Assist Waste Containers that Rev-a-Shelf charges a ridiculous amount of money the same thing? Does anyone know if we accomplish the same thing with the Double Bottom Mount Rev-A-Motion⢠Wood Waste Containers with the IKEA Utrusta added to it? It might save us a little money but what it will gain us is a 1 1/4" of height, which will help since we're putting a pull-out garbage unit in our sink base beneath an undermount Silgranite sink (on the left side of a right drain sink). We're fine with 35 qt cans. We currently only have a 20 qt can under our sink. We won't have height issues with our other garbage pull-out in the island. We need 4 bins for garbage, mixed recycling, glass recycling and returnables and putting one beneath our sink was the only way to get 2 pull-outs in without giving up other much-needed storage. Would someone please measure the distance from the top of the can to the cab frame for the drawer above for me? I keep looking at the photos but I can't tell how much room there is between can and cab top to know what is possible for my situation. Thank you!...See MoreCutting hole in stick-built cabinets for dishwasher - DIY?
Comments (33)We looked into portables but don't have room to put one. Also there are no used ones under $100 for sale near us, the few times we've checked. (I'm also squeamish and don't care to own a used dishwasher.) :-) The family is rooting for us to put a dishwasher in to make our lives more comfortable and convenient while waiting to buy. They know that not having a dishwasher is a drawback and deterrent to would-be buyers, too, so they feel this would help cover their investment should we decide to back out for some reason (we don't plan to unless the world ends). I LOVE to cook and cook elaborately and not having a d/w has forced me to resort to paper plates and many, many sandwiches and heat-ups. Believe me, we've thought this through and through, moving from/selling a home with a remodeled kitchen to this one, and have done the "trial period" of living w/o a d/w for 7 months now. Yep, I really want one. And the one I am getting will be the same one that gets re-installed into my remodeled kitchen -- researched them till my eyes bled. So it's not an impulsive decision for sure. :-)...See Moreemho23
