A very un-american attitude....but still worth discussing.
Comments (67)I came to terms with this years ago -- I stopped trying to do everything and now just do what I can when I can do it, and I try my best not to bite off more than I can chew (although admittedly it still happens sometimes). Someone wisely told me years ago that the most important tool in the toolbox is the checkbook - and I agree with that wholeheartedly. I work full time and am in grad school - those are more important than my garden and take precedence. If I have to pay to have something done that needs to be done, so be it (I am working as is my husband, and I do realize I am fortunate in this, work is most definitely a blessing). At this point in my life I refuse to spend my precious free time fretting over things that are waiting for me to do. Of course there are seasonal chores, but if they don't get done, so what? What's the worst that's going to happen if I don't clean up the garden in the fall? So I'll have to clean up in the spring. Big deal. My annuals didn't get planted until June. So what. They got in the ground late, but they're fine. So what if you lose some of your seedlings? You can sow more. It took me years to cultivate this attitude, and IT IS FREEING. Now when I work outside it's normally because I *want* to and I enjoy it, not because I *have* to and end up dreading it instead. Comments (249)Hmmmm. My yard is FULL of mature, tree sized pencil plant euphorbia tirucalli. I know the sap is toxic and have been burned several times but after 30 years I'm just cautious. Neither my 8 year old daughter nor my cat has been harmed. On the positive side, these have a pleasing sculptural quality AND performed well during a brush fire years ago in that they dont't easily catch on fire. In fact the fire department praised my yard as an effective fire break. Plantations of these have been grown in South America for biodiesel. "The pencil cactus has the potential to be a biofuel because it can grow in areas where other crops can't. It's also drought and salt tolerant. " Then there is an article in the Asian Journal of Tropical Biomedicine regarding its medicinal uses. Just don't try that at home unless you are a highy skilled chemist. The down side is that they don't produce much shade, the sap can and will drip on you even if you just walk by and unknowingly snap off a branch. Use goggles, gloves and hazmat suits if you're cutting one down and disposing of it. Most recently, I have been burning the very dead and dried branches in my indoor fireplace. My eyes have been itching and I think this was a bad idea....See MoreWhat is this, and is it worth it?
Comments (53)I'll send you a few for free, np.... My experience (so far) is that they aren't easy unless u live in a warm climate or have a way to keep them warm and moist for 100 days. I've had no luck up here in CNY. But feel free to try. Where do you live? They need to be in moist soil until they germinate between 70 and 100 degrees, out of the sun - high humidity. After they sprout they can be acclimated to the sun. I tried doing it on my hot water heater.. No luck as of yet. It's hard to remember to water them everyday when they're out of sight - out of mind... Google "Grow a Christmas Palm from seed..."...See Moreplant swap fort worth - part four
Comments (148)Thank you, Everyone, for your kind words! I was just a little stressed out earlier. I have all of my plants labeled and boxed up into April's car. Now, it's time for a little Kahulua and Cream! Tina, I put you down for the last Perilla! Erin, so glad that you can come! I think that a bag of worms would be really cool. Maybe you can do a little, tiny talk about how to raise them.....! Like Debbie said, just check at my table tomorrow to find something for trade. Rebecca, thanks for posting your phone number. April and I will be leaving at 8:00 in the morning (right after I stop and buy the donuts! We can never take a road trip without donuts!) Hopefully we won't have any trouble finding our way. Will there be bathrooms at the park? See you all soon! Necia...See MoreRelated Professionals
