What kind of blinds should I get for my windows with little depth?

My house is just a small house. It's technically a Bungalow, but a very simple cottage like one. It has a lot of windows, and they are all very tall 5 foot windows that allow a lot of natural light that I like. All the windows are in twos in the front of the house. They are these big gorgeous windows with gorgeous trim. So I have them wide open most of the day.

The problem is, they are double hung and I have a lot of depth at the top but maybe an inch at the bottom because the bottom window frame. I bought some blinds not thinking about it and when they come down they hit the bottom window frame so when fully down they are draped over the bottom frame. The other problem this presents is, I have to have the header very far forward so I can't cover the header with anything decorative. I don't really want anything gaudy like curtains. Just something simple and sleek. Roller blinds maybe? Something cloth? Something with just a chain?

I really don't like the blinds much. I was thinking roller blinds or something like this? (I'd want white)

If it were my house I would do shutters on the bottom half in any room where I didn't need to block light completely. I love your windows.

Thank you. I was thinking shutters!!! Didn't think bottom half, that's a good idea. I thought it was a no go because the sides have no space (I mean the windows just have that thin middle strip that has the weights inside). Have any pics of what you mean?

I got a small electric tiller from Lowes and I love it.. we have a nice size garden and in the spring my son will rent a big tiller and he usually will rent it on the weekend so he can til it one day.. let it sit over night and then goes back and redoes it the next day.. then before we plant.. I will use my small tiller to work in some addtives that I want to add to the soil..and it works great.. then I just use it the rest of the growing season. I am going to try a few new things this year.. mulching around the tomatoe plants etc. we use horse----- one year and my gosh.. we have had a lot of trouble with weeds ever since.. someone told me to get some sheep or goat as they desolve the seeds of the weeds and grass they eat.. where as the horse and cows do not.. so when you put the horse ---- in the garden.. you are adding seeds. so I may try some of that this year.. our soil is rich.. but maybe too rich because it grows everything.. We live in Northern Kentucky and we are on Ohio River so every once in a blue moon our garden will get flooded and that makes the soil really rich.. Huggy

I met "Bruiser" on Saturday, and so did Lily .. he's a great calm sweet dog. I'm going back to bring him home for good on Friday. Lily and his meeting was very uneventful, sniffing and then wanting to play. The first thing he did when I saw him was to lick my hand .. little kisses. I learned that he is approx. 1.5 years old. He and his buddy were turned over to the SPCA by people who had them living in a stall in a barn. Someone asked them to turn the dogs over to the SPCA so they could get real homes, and they complied. So he's never been in a house that they know of .. so we'll have to slowly introduce him to things like vacuum cleaners, etc. Those big scary things! And potty training. Though the woman at the SPCA said he might be easy to potty train since he's always gone potty in an outside setting, and might already prefer that ... one can always hope! Picking him up Friday, and have an appointment at the vet before going home ... he has strange dew claws on his back legs that I want looked at. So I'll post some pictures over the weekend and he's getting used to home. I'm amazed at what a calm sweet guy he is. And his new name will be Brownie ... Bruiser doesn't work.

Hi there, not a pro but i handle special order blinds for window treatments where i work. A 2” blind will be heavy looking on those windows when you need an outside mount, although when these are ordered for outside window frame placement, there should have been an option for outside returns for your valences. That would cover your headrail and ‘wrap’ around and ‘return’ back to the wall at a depth of your choosing. If you might consider another type of window covering, a roller shade or roman shade with a ‘flat’ fold might not be to ‘thick’ looking when completely open. If you still prefer to tilt a shade open and raise, there are 1” thick and i believe 1 1/2” faux wood slats available for order that would be a softer look.

Altho I usually prefer inside mount, you may have to consider outside mount, if there's no room inside. Curtains don't have to be gaudy. Nice neutral linen curtains on a rod are anything but gaudy. But if you don't like them, then you don't like them.

It sounds like you may be mounting the blinds in the improper location. The depth should be the same at the top and bottom of the opening unless the blinds are being mounted in the actual "window" portion of the opening. The blinds are not supposed to be mounted in the area where the window slides up. They are to be mounted in front of that.

The photos are hard to tell what the depth is like but if the mounting depth shallow, you may want to consider doing an outside mount, meaning the blind/shade would mount on the trim work.
