J&P Bareroots and RU Pots Arrived!
Comments (20)I am so looking forward to that shrub rose section blooming this year. They were such nice but small roses when I planted that section. Could not believe how much they grew by fall. This spring I did cut them all back as I like my shrub roses to get nice and full instead of tall and skinny. I have no plans to order from J&P this spring as I don't see anything I can not live without in their catalog and I know I can find a great selection in the J&P Milk Carton roses locally. In fact I am going to the nursery that has the best selection this week, probably tomorrow, so we will see what I come home with....See MoreOrdering 6 Q.of Swedens-- Roses Unlimited or DA direct?
Comments (15)Hi Sarabell Welcome to another Nebraskan gardener on GW! I totally agree that it would be best to buy your plants from Roses Unlimited for several reasons. First, RU has very substantial gallon-sized potted plants and own root are generally a better bet for our cold zone. Queen of Sweden grows well in my Lincoln yard on own roots. Austins don't tend to die to the ground for me, but in the early years they can get a fair bit of winter kill and you may need to trim them back in the spring to a foot or two. My two QoS bushes are quite tall (well over 6 feet) and narrow - maybe 2 feet or a little more wide. Second, I've had some of the problems Hoovb has mentioned from David Austin in their bareroots (grafted or ownroot). Even though Dr. Huey grows well in our alkaline soil, the plants from David Austin direct have a higher than average fail/death rate for me, and the last one I got from them (Munstead Wood) arrived bone dry and crunchy. Third reason, whenever possible I like to support our independent and smaller rose companies that sell quality products. We just lost Vintage Roses this year, and I like to do everything I can to contribute to the ongoing success of the great companies we have left. With the international craze for DA roses, that company isn't in any serious risk for the foreseeable future. Besides, Pat Henry at Roses Unlimited is such a lovely person and very helpful in discussing rose options with you if you need that personal touch. Finally, since you're in Nebraska, we could talk about adding your roses to a bulk order that Roses Unlimited offers that cuts half off the price of shipping. A rose buddy in Omaha and I have done this for several years to make up the 45 or so roses required for a bulk order, and with Vintage sadly out of commission, that shouldn't be a problem for a group spring RU order. I'm in Lincoln and would probably have them shipped here if you're interested, and then you could pop over and pick them up at an agreed-upon time when convenient in spring. If you're interested, feel free to email me privately at my GW email address (I think I have that enabled), and be patient as I only check that email address maybe once a month. Comments (43)This week I received 6 roses from HCR and they were perfect fitting snuggly in the box to avoid movement. That was also my experience with Burling. I received some crushed ones from Chamblees when I ordered from them 2016. ARE does pack each in its own cardboard section to prevent movement as they are so large and heavy. My Austin's were bareroot, so just in a bag. Did you not want to share the source Deborah? I totally understand as I don't like to trash any of these wonderful places. Now that I have more experience, I care less if they are crushed or even broken and more about the size of rootball. I know with a well-developed root system they'll race forward with top-growth regardless! : )) Just my experience....See MoreTime to order from Roses Unlimited
Comments (7)I think you will like Moonlight Romantica. It put on excellent growth for me, this being its first year in my garden. Came as a small liner this past spring, 2019, from Stargazer Perennials through Amazon. It made 3' of growth, with buds at each terminal....no octopus, blind growth at all, unlike so many Kordes roses are known to do for me. Let me not forget to report that it is very fragrant, too, and the flower itself is long lasting. Black Spot resistance is very good, not Knock Out level, but well above average. It does appear to have very good vigor....may be a large bush at maturity. Now, if it survives the winter without protection, which is my new approach to my roses, nobody gets winter protection anymore, let the best roses win, like Quietness and it's fellow tough buddies.
