Hi everyone! I'm remodeling my guest/kids bathroom (picture attached). I'm using black and white tile on floor (picture attached), and white subway tile on shower walls. I'm going to install clear glass shower door. I was not planning on tiling the walls. Since the tile is patterned, I think it won't look good if I use it as a baseboard. Any suggestions on what I could use as a baseboard besides wood? Also wondering if this vanity would look good or if I should just stick with a plain white one. I tend to visualize things one way and then hate it when I see it come together. Can't risk it with the bathroom. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

I would caution against MDF if your kids tend to splash water or if you wet mop.

First of all why do you want to put a clear glass door you don't wanna keep trying to make it spotless believe life is shot put frosted glass and for the tile they are really nice and I like the vanity in the picture it will look beautiful together as for the baseboard weather its food or plastic I think you're gonna paint it white but I'm a wood person

Stylish choices. Is the bathroom wide enough to accommodate enough of the floor pattern? As for the baseboard, you could ask the tile shop to recommend you a white tile.

Also echo latifeh's misgivings about the glass shower door upkeep. With kids, I would find a shower curtain immensely easier. YMMV, obviously.

Finally, are those doors and/or drawers in the vanity? Have you checked it in person to see the ease of use? I prefer drawers over cabinets but again, you know your storage style.

Since this is your kids' bathroom, I would prioritize function over form.

Hard to imagine how a walk-in shower "opens up" space when it takes at least as much footprint as the tub, but maybe I'm not understanding the plan. A house needs to have a tub for resale. But it doesn't need one in every bathroom. If taking it out helps your options, go for it! Just remember that 9-year-olds aren't going to reliably squeegee glass or whatever, so keep the upkeep parameters reasonable. Also, if you have a clever way to change the j-and-j into two smaller bathrooms, most people prefer that for many reasons.

Your deflection rating will need to be assessed. Deflection ratings are CHANGED (increased) by adding PLYWOOD. Cement backer board is NOT structural. It is always advisable to use TWO layers of subfloor. The first layer is attached to the JOISTS (the slats you see are the first layer and are considered 'useless' with tile so you might as well get rid of them). The second layer is then screwed to the FIRST layer (do NOT 'screw and glue'). The purpose for TWO layers of subfloor = the top layer is EASILY removed if something changes/goes wrong (glue causes issues with removal = damage to bottom layer = more problems then it is worth). Right. So now you know you need TWO layers of plywood. You can get two layers in there with a total of 1.5" (3/4" + 3/4") worth of 'thickness'. Now you have the RIGHT deflection rating (super important) and you have added quite a bit of height. Now you assess how much extra height you need. A well installed porcelain tile can sit (roughly) 3/4" high. You can add cement board to make up the little bit of difference. There you have it. Two layers of plywood + cement backer board to make up the difference.

You have opened up quite a can of worms with this project! Since the pipes appear to be galvanized iron, I would suggest repiping. That stuff is probably at the end of it's lifespan. Is some of the subfloor nailed in between the joists? I've only seen that once or twice before.

I would deepen the shower where it stands. Use the little bump-out in the tub space by building a 4 ft high wall even with the regular wall and then be able to use that new wall depth to put in a ledge (in lieu of a niche) at the 4 ft height and a toe-rest for shaving indented into the new wall at the proper toe-ret height. To get storage, get a trough sink with two faucets, leave plenty of counter space on either end, and use 2 ft of your enormous vanity to build a linen closet. If you think you need more places to put things down while getting ready, put a ledge just above the faucets. I will go look for a photo to show you what I mean. Holy cow! The iPad app now lets me make links, just like the regular computer app always has. When did that happen?

I know that a few of the basic white ceramic tile lines have baseboards. Chose the style you like (simple versus one with a more complicated, formal profile) and then see if a sample tile of your flooring looks good next to it. Your full service tile shops should each have at least one brand. A ceramic or porcelain baseboard will be better if you mop with a wet mop, and if water gets on the floors from the kids.
