Help with Dragon Tree!
Comments (5)Agreed, Dracaena fragrans, also sensitive to tap water chemicals. Repotting is a great way to help combat that, by getting rid of the old soil. You can also catch some rain water, use distilled, or the condensate from a dehumidifier or A/C. Keeping it soggy doesn't allow the roots to breathe. When it has dried significantly, so the whole thing is much more lightweight, water it gently but thoroughly, so water runs out of the holes in the bottom (and is not trapped in a drain saucer.) You can do that at a sink or outside. When it's finished dripping, sitting it back on the saucer is fine. Then repeat the process. There are many discussions about Dracaena here, besides amount of light, they are very much alike in their water and soil preferences. That's a really nice looking plant, BTW! It obviously loves that wonderful spot by the window. Keeping the yellow/brown parts trimmed off helps keep it looking great too, IMO. Glad you took a pic of them though, for this discussion....See MoreUrgent Advice, Dracaena Marginata - Dragon Tree
Comments (5)Cut below the squishy part of the base with a sharp sterile knife(hold knife blade in gas flame to sterilize). Then dust the cut end lightly with cinnamon. New growths should appear within a month. As for the top end, do the same, and when it appears to be dry, try rooting in in a warm environment in a standard houseplant mix or perlite. I've even managed to root them in water....See MoreAnyone familiar with Daemonorops draco 'Dragon Blood Tree'?
Comments (16)Hanz, I found they sprouted really easily from the fresh seed I picked of a tree back in 2004, seem to recall I had 100% germination. Gave several seedlings away, but they have all died, mine are the only survivors. Below is a pic I've just taken to show you my efforts at growing something like this, nothing fantastic, but they're mine all the same...lol! The middle one has always had darker leaves edged in red, the outer two have the yellow margins and paler leaves, all seed was from the same bunch. They only branch after flowering, so I guess mine are doomed to be single stemmed as they take decades and a really hot climate to grow properly...how long mine will last remains to be seen...will have to pass one on to each of my 3 children as family heirlooms!! Comments (47)It's never too early for Christmas in the woods, kiwi. But seriously, i do understand the irritation for some people at the constant stretching of the season, mtn and Annie and others' objections to trotting it out early here are not unreasonable. (Although I think mtn should be at least relieved that there was no red on the tree, her most unfavorite color, lol) And I finally got the vintage 1959s tree topper on the tree and it is perfect if I do say so myself. I waited like a stalker until the right one came up in ebay and got it for less than $12!! Now I just have to dig out the Burberryish plaid ribbon and tuck it in. Handy Guy is much better than I am at that though, so I may save the job for him. edited to replace sideways picture This post was edited by kswl on Fri, Oct 10, 14 at 13:24...See Morefloral_uk z.8/9 SW UK
