HELP!! Cat is destroying our new couch!

We just got a new couch and a chair to replace some old furniture. Our one and a half year male cat took a big liking to it right away. We only had it for a couple of days and there are threads and bumps sticking out already. We sprayed it with citrus, for which he doesn’t seem to care at all and applied sticky paper deterrent to the side corners. When he touches the sticky surface he doesn’t like it, but he’s not a picky scratcher so he finds a bald spot and goes for it. On top of that he starts to lick the tape and tries to take it off with the teeth all while his whiskers are sticking to it. He is a weirdo. There is a scratching post right next to it, which he uses too. Any suggestions or help is appreciated. We have a polyester blend woven fabric on the furniture (when buying it we haven’t thought about him scratching it because he hasn’t touched our old couch, only scratched it up underneath). Are there any sprays or coatings on the market that would make the fabric of the couch more durable?

Hi! Our cat (aged 17 now) was a notorious couch-destroyer... especially leather sofas. when we got our last sofa, I purchased a “scat mat” (Amazon) that gives a very weak shot when something touches it. The cat has not come close to the sofa since then! We instead got him a cozy catbed in front of the gas fireplace and he loves that!

I know you've tried sticky tape and your weirdo cat LOL, one of my cats is even weirder LOL, I used clear packing tape in the areas they started to scratch and that worked for me, after a few months they gave up trying to scratch that couch.

Hello Imaginae, Like Thom, I'm no expert on these things, but I've had some success with saving dying plants from my local box stores. If you have no leaves at all, I think you're going to have a hard to saving the plant since there is nothing to trigger the photosynthesis. I totally recommend you try to save it though, if for no other reason than the challenge of it. I would place the plant under fluorescent light, make sure it's in appropriate moistened soil, and place a ziplock baggie over it to maintain moisture. If nothing happens after a month, then the plant probably isn't going to make it. Do you know what type it was? Perhaps you could obtain a leaf to start over.

Sorry to hear abt this. Is the last stem still in the mix or not? Whatever you do, DO NOT place anything in a damp anything, paper towel or otherwise, that will rot it for sure! Take the remaining bits & lay them ON TOP of some mix, give them bright, indirect light & place them out of the kitties' reach. DO NOT water or mist, give them time & they will sprout roots on their own after which you can re-plant them. For the remaining stem, if still in the mix, place it somewhere safer, hold off water for a month & let it recover, it should sprout new growth on its own. The same can be achieved if the remaining stem is out of the pot. Just place it somewhere in good light (away from kitties' reach) & it too will sprout roots &/or new growth. You could also stand up the remaining stem (if out of the mix) standing up in an empty clay pot (no mix, no water), it can survive that way for at least a month or 2 just like that. When you see new growth & roots you'll be able to re-plant it. Good luck w/ it!

No gophers in MA, but many woodchucks which are MUCH larger. Voles like eating bulbs and tubors. Chipmunks borrow holes, but are usually nut or berry eaters. Mice, grey or brown like bird seeds, and nest in soft things like stuffed lawn furnature. Rabbits love chewing on any greens of any kind. Of course deer also can even eat whole peaches off the trees. Squirrels are usually nut eaters too, as they also like taking bird food, especially sunflower seeds. Around here, there are also a few red squrrels, lots less compared to the grays. Also a few black squirrels. I have one black with a bad eye, only sees me when itse facing in the right direction. When I planted my saffron crocus, I made a big 1/4 holed wire basket with 6 inch tall sides to prevent burrowing. Also added abrasive pellets that the diggers hate to dig through. This stuff surrounds the crocus bulb area. My ffruit trees also have 1/4 inch wire screening as a wrap around at soil level. It helps prevent girdling by rabbits, which can chew all the tender bark off trees very fast. I also have moles out there, but they seem to go after worms mostly.

Harriet, I, too, recently took in a squirrely girlie. Roxie is soooo adorable and irresistible that I just want to snuggle her close all the time, but she'll have none of it! She'll squirm and complain anytime I pick her up for any purpose other than to carry her into the bathroom where she can eat without having to compete with the big cats. The rest of the time, though, FORGET IT! She'll almost always bounce away from me the second I touch her. I'd almost forgotten how fickle young cats can be. Last time I raised kittens was when I rescued a litter from an abusive owner back in 1996. From their kittenhood through young adulthood, I never knew from one day to the next who would love me or hate me, who would run to me or from me, who would demand attention or reject it like hot coals. It was never any reflection on how they really felt about me, though. I knew they all loved me. They just had to assert their youthful independence from time to time. Jeannie and Roxie are no different. At their young ages (Roxie is within a few months either side of 9 mos) and with their still being so new to our families, there's really no way of telling what sort of bonds they'll ultimately develop with us. I hope and expect, though, that they'll become more accepting of physical affection as they mature. If they do mature into aloof divas, we've both got our snuggly boys to warm our laps (I've got a few other snuggly girls, too). BTW, Roxie appears to be Persian right down to her smooshy face and long hair, so I'm with you on the brushing dilemma, too. It's darned difficult to groom a squirmer! Laurie

How sad. I know how upsetting this is because our cat thought the new sofa was a big scratcher for her. Make sure Kitty’s claws are trimmed. Won’t really protect the furniture but if her claws are bothering her, keeping them trimmed could help. There are also glue on plastic tips which really work to prevent a cat from damaging the furniture. We used these for several months and then finally our cat gave up on the sofa. I would recommend you do this right away. Probably a 2-person job.

I think we used the brand called Soft Claws but there are many available on Amazon. Maybe your pet store. It’s not cruel at all. Our cat had pink...lol.

Otherwise—Could you (temporarily) wrap target areas in aluminum foil? Or attach hanging sheets of newspaper. Get another scratcher or two, if Kitty has upright scratchers, try a couple of the flat scratchers.

I use these. Place one by each place being scratched, You can gradually find another place more out of the way. My cat loves them so much, he gets excited when I buy a new one.

My vet also will clip the claws tips for only $10.

ETA: Yes to any of the suggestions above to wrapping the furniture until he is using the scratchers.

What type of scratching post is near the sofa and how tall is it? My cats love this post and they've never touched my furniture. Is he scratching on the vertical part of the sofa or the horizontal sections? Try some of the cardboard scratchers on the floor if he likes horizontal.

Have you tried catnip on the scratching post? Also, do you have a cat tree/tower in the room? If not, I suggest buying one and make sure it has at least one post wrapped in sisal rope.
