Huge Yard - We're Slaves, Please Help!
Comments (14)KarinL: That's a fair question, and I actually did more or less know what I was getting into with 5 acres, but poor planning on my part made it about the WHOLE 5 acres. The usual Montana Homestead way, whether 5 or 500 acres is you concentrate around the house as your main "canvas." The mistake here is we have made the canvas too large. In all reality, using the whole thing wouldn't be inherently bad, but requires some additional planning. Example are the Olive Trees we have beyond the lawn. The grass out there is kind of nasty brohm grass, which isn't irrigated. Most of our moisture is from snow, so by mid July, anything not watered is brown. So, I have a nice little 10' radius green patch in the middle of high brown. I mow the field to offset this. My preference would be to simply let the prairie grass grow without the little "landscape islands" I have now. I'm not sure what farmland looks like up there, but out here, you'll often see a 20-100acre plot with a house in the middle of it. A lot of times, the only way to tell there's a house is that it's surrounded by trees, which are the only trees on the property. I'm not big on blocking the views, but that same basic concept would be okay. I really don't want smaller, I just want more efficient, if that makes sense, and more deliberate. I'm meeting with a designer next week out here, so I'm hopeful he can help me get things under control. Point well taken though. One thing I've been saying is the bank should require you add $10-15k for a tractor into the mortgage on any lot bigger than 2 acres. ;->...See MoreCanvas art placement
Comments (2)I completely agree with Roseabbey. I have a huge canvas painting that fills one entire wall in my living room - you can see a portion of it in this photo. (Admittedly, my room is small!) This pic is an old one, as the sofa has now changed positions and sits in front of the windows and there's a chair and table in its place. I think artwork "goes" wherever you want it to go, and there are no hard and fast rules about having to hang anything over the sofa....See Moreart/decorate huge wall-any ideas?
Comments (4)I think you can still get a contemporary look with multiple pieces, but they still need to be fairly large for that space. Maybe 3 vertical rectangular canvases hung next to each other. Or if you found 40x40" pieces that you love and can find 4 that look good together, hang them in a square with 2 up and 2 down. Or how about a contemporary canvas floor cloth or tapestry hung with clips from a curtain rod with cool modern finials? You could hang one or three depending on what you find. (Odd numbers seem to work best; 2 might feel like it's dividing the wall in half.) If you are creative you can create the canvases or floor cloths yourself, borrowing ideas you find online. If you can post a picture of the wall, people might have more ideas or can do mockups. Here is a link that might be useful: Painted floor cloths - contemporary...See Moreneed curb appeal ideas!!! Comments (7)Jeez, just noticed half my post didn’t show up either. The body of the house was recently painted ( please excuse mildew on stairs, no one uses the front entrance). Roof is wet in this photo, so appears darker than it is. I would like to make it enticing for visitors and potential buyers to come to the front entrance. Thanks in advance for any advice!...See Moregroveraxle
