Comments (14)The trellis is 12 feet tall and 8 feet wide. In that case, while I have never gardened in your climate and I've never grown either of these roses, I suspect these two roses might be worth considering: Climbing Mrs. Herbert Stevens Climbing Lady Hillingdon Both are climbing sports of tea roses (NOT "hybrid tea" roses). I can't easily grow either of these in my climate north of Boston (with really rare exceptions the tea roses like more heat in the summer and winter than I can offer), but in your Houston area climate I won't be surprised to learn there are other rose growers here (perhaps on the "Antique Rose" forum) from the Houston area who are familiar with both of these roses, and can tell you better than I can whether they are climbing roses that do well in your area (as I suspect they might both be). You may well not find either available in a garden center, but you will find them available via mail order from rose specialty nurseries....See MoreClimbing Yellow / Orange Rose for Long Island
Comments (19)I would love to see any pics of this structure, even without any plantings. I'm pondering the construction of my two arbors now that my best friend who is a master carpenter has opted out of the project. I'm also happy to hear that MH does well in our parts. Do you have your plants listed on HMF? I have a few more suggestions as I've been reading up on this myself, but I'll have to post them later....See MoreClimbing roses recommendation for shade
Comments (29)Rose Beginner, I have been thinking about this because I have a similar dilemma. I just realized I already have a rose, two, in fact, growing on the shady north end of my house, further shaded by two large trees. It's an open area, so it's light, but still shady. The rose that's working pretty well for me there is William Baffin, a rosy red Canadian Explorer Series rose. The blooms are nothing special, but it does supply color to an otherwise boring side of the house. The best show is early summer, then it continues to have a little color through the season. I need to cover a new pipe installed on the same side of the house, so I will plant another Wm. Baffin there. The ones I already have are about 20 years old. They've never been fed anything other than a shovel full of compost now and then....See Morerobin rose
