Climbing Rose that Blooms on New Wood? & Roses for part shade
Comments (11)Thanks Dan for the info, unfortunatly, blaze and new dawn both bloom on old wood. Golden Showers looks like a nice hardy climber though, and it blooms on new and old wood. Not sure if I would want yellow though- If anyone else has a few more suggestions for a new wood blooming climbing rose? I have been seeing "Shade Tolerant" in the descriptions of some roses (including the Golden Showers) and I figured that would mean they can withstand part shade. I was hoping this meant it could still do well with 3/4 hours of direct sun a day- can anyone clear this up for me? How tolerant is "shade tolerant" when it comes to roses? And of course, if anyone is growing a rose bush/climber/polyantha in part sun, I would love to know which kind it is. Thanks!...See MoreRecommendations for climbing roses in zone 5a
Comments (15)Going along with micahelg's statement, I am growing "America." It is a large flowered climber with high-centered blooms that resemble a hybrid tea. Unfortunately it is not cane hardy. It is too close to a shade tree, and only grows 5'. I wish I could see grow here in a sunny location. The flowers are coral colored and beautiful. I also grow Spectra, another large flowered climber, that I absolutely love. It too has high-centered hybrid tea style blooms. In France I believe it is regarded as a hybrid tea. Mine will reach seven feet tall. However, it is not a Zone 5-A rose bush. I have it in a very protected location that gets full sun but it protected from the wind. Although it gets cold temps, it would mimic a Zone 7 micro climate. The roses in this bed are tremendously vigorous. I also am growing what I believe is Dr. Huey (the common rootstock used for roses) and it puts on a tremendous display. It is a great climber and once was sold in commerce. It is cane hardy....See MorePlease recommend a small climbing rose for new rose grower
Comments (4)You might tell her to try something like Altissimo, a beautiful, single (5 petals) red rose, or maybe Climbing Pinkie, which is a little larger and should also be okay in your climate. Pinkie has clusters of small pink fully-petaled flowers and is probably the more disease-resistant of the two. But, be aware, no rose is going to be disease-resistant or flower well with less than 5 or 6 hours of direct sunlight a day....See More"Climbing Rose" - Recommendation please?
Comments (11)I am going to suggest pink Don Juan, it has big, beautiful rich pink blooms that smell wonderful and has been very healthy in my hot and humid Texas climate. I got mine from Chamblees last spring. It bloomed all summer and the blooms stayed vibrant in the heat, it also can handle a little bit of shade as mine stops getting direct sun around 3 pm....See MoreRose Beginner Zone 9b LA
