I don't have any direct experience with your situation re: sunroom, but have a couple observations for you to mull over. Last year I purchased some replacement windows - P*ll* brand - they are double-pane, low-e/argon gas. It was a waste of $$ since this last winter I actually (first time ever) had FROST buildup in those windows worse than when I lived in a trailer (ie, no insulation, poor seals, etc). These were mid-range windows; not top of the line, not budget cheapos. Beware the hype or get iron-clad guarantees. Now a comment about your questions. I believe there is a formula for window-to-room ratio for sunny climes like yours. You can do that, or if you really want more glass, think about a shade cover that you can use inside/outside during the sunny season. Yes, putting it up/taking it down might be a pain, but it will work. An 80% shade cloth on the inside might keep things cool enough - but like I said, I have no direct experience with this, just a stray thought.

I know it seems great to have all these windows and I am definitely not complaining, but we realize we could have had almost the same effect and light with 8 instead of 10 - and saved a lot of money (in cost of windows and framing) but the architect shows you the drawings and you think wow, that looks good, and you don't think about whether or not it will be practical in use. Our architect came up with that to remedy an really unfortunate addition done by former owner. They stuck on a weirdly designed very 1980's round addition to a 1920's Dutch Colonial - but in a completely different style from original and tried to make it look somewhat like a lighthouse. From the outside, it just looked like a big round mass of stucco, now it looks much better. But I digress... Anyway, that's a good idea about the remote control shades/blinds. Do you know if they work well over time. I like technology, but just want to make sure they are not repair prone. I guess I can search and see if there are any threads about that.

Hi Central 79, Glad to hear you are narrowing down your window options -- it will be good for you to get the decision made so you can move on to the next big decision. I don't know anything about either the Windsor or Plygem windows, but hopefully you will get feedback from the window experts on this forum about these two brands. I know Integrity is a popular choice on this board. As per mixing different window materials, I think that would not be a problem with the attic windows, or any basement windows. We have vinyl in our basement, and on the north front face of our home. Before starting our addition we had recently replaced all the north facing windows with a high quality vinyl windows. When we chose to go with fiberglass for the addition, I was worried they would not go. However, this has not proven to be a problem given all the windows on one side of the house are the same. All of our windows are white like you are suggesting. For sure the vinyl windows we have have thicker mullions than the fiberglass, but they don't look that different. Now we don't have wood on the interior as you are considering as our fiberglass windows are fiberglass on the inside and outside -- not sure if that makes a big difference. I was unclear from your post where you were planning to mix the windows. Will different windows be in the same room? Will different windows be on the same side of the house viewed from the exterior? I do think the attic fixed ovals will not look out of place with your main floor fiberglass windows. Are you planning to mix two or three different kinds of windows? I have curtains from S&N in one room; they're beautiful and high quality. I also have lots of shades and one curtain from Blinds.com and have been very happy with them. You can get cordless woven shades in a pretty large width, and they always have sales. We also splurged and got motorized shades from Hunter Douglas for a couple of rooms, and I feel so fancy every time they open and close on schedule. But window treatments are surprisingly expensive!
