I found that our local lumber yards have better prices than the big box stores. For pre-hung, solid wood doors, the best local prices are at discount building suppliers. Our exterior french doors (Neuma) were ordered through a local building supply company. Our interior 8' knotty alder door slabs were purchased from a local door supplier - but they seemed a bit fly-by-nightish and didn't stay open long. Brand wise, the only recommendation I have is for the Neuma french doors. We have a single 8' door, two sets of double 5-0 8' doors (one operable, one not), and a 7' triple unit, one operable door between two fixed doors. I paid $5700 for all these doors, which was about what one Pella or Anderson double french unit was quoted for. All of the doors open outward, which increased the wind rating. I recently purchased two Lemieux exterior doors for our new house for the same reason that you stated above...solid mahogany for a great price. The doors are installed and I LOVE them! I had no problem ordering them or having them delivered. I too was hesitant because the price was so good but, was told by two different door suppliers that although they don't often have customers that order them (probably becasue they aren't widely known in the states) they have never had a problem with them and their customers seem to be very pleased with the quality.

We used Lemieux exterior solid mahogany doors on our new home and was very pleased with the quality and price. For interior doors, I chose to use TruStile solid core MDF doors. They are gorgeous and are so heavy that when you close the doors, you really feel that you actually closed a door and not a slab of foam. Good Luck!

Thanks. I wish I had done research on this before, but I assumed it was "standard", or at least available at an upcharge, since the architect drew it in. I just looked up the plans for our old house and that had a 42" x 8 ft. wood door. So now I either have to pay up for a custom door or redesign the entry. The door header matches the window headers, so with a shorter door I would need to add a transom and integrate with the sidelights. Why are things never easy!
