Cold, Moist Stratification
Comments (5)Hi, For my cold moist stratified seeds I don't use any different soil than my warm seeds(exm. tomatoes). I use a soilless mix(I like fafards or sungro)...just check at your local greenhouse...I am sure they will sell you what they use if they don't carry some of the name brands. Now, I do usually add chicken grit to my outside treatment containers...making a crumbly mix for good drainage. The chicken grit you can get at a feed store. And don't worry about the mold...never had a problem with it. And I get my sharp sand at the concrete plant...more coarse with lots of rock sizes in it...many times I use this mixed into the soilless mix as well. m...See MoreCold-stratification of seed; and growing in plugs or trays?

I have collected many seeds from perennials, like iris, during the winter, brought them in and stored them for trade. The traders recieving them have had no problems and excellent germination. I should say all the seeds I collected showed no sign of breaking dormancy and none were collected close to spring when they would naturally start sprouting. Comments (4)I read in a few places on line that if not allowed to dry out a couple of weeks of cold stratification would help them germinate. Could you provide that citation? In my area, Red Maple or Acer rubrum seed will ripen next month. Some years they are shed in large quantities, not this year. When they ripen seed should first be checked for soundness. Cut a few in half and be sure they are not hollow. When you find a good tree use seed from that tree. Break off the wing and discard it. Direct seed them into pots, put several seed in each pot, you can always come back later on and remove the weakest ones. Red & Silver maples have seed which matures in May, cold stratification doesn't figure into their germination....See MoreAnnie (Georgia / USDA Hardiness Zone 8A)
