Comments (6)The bush is over 10 years old about 2 feet tall and spindly. Every spring it would do really well and then get massacred. At one time I had over 100 bushes and spraying them constantly was more than I wanted to deal with. I have maybe four of five roses that I can spray now and that is more manageable. Next to the RDV is a Portland from Glendora which is a beast over 6 feet tall and over 8 feet wide. I was reluctant to cut it back because the deer nibbled on the bottom and left the top alone. I'm going to clean it up and spray it. I have a Beauty of Glazenwood that will go into bloom in the next few months. It climbed a rock ledge through a fence into some trees. It puts on quite a show for a little while and the deer would need extension ladders to get to the growth. I'll take some pictures of these roses when they are in bloom....See MoreEarly Riser/Kwintus
Comments (4)I got mine from: WI MI B - 2008: 55-90, tender long flat green pods, 7-9 seeds per pod, delicious sweet bean flavor, high yields, CV Abu 00 This year one SSE member who also got his seed from WI MI B offers it: NY MO J - 2013: 55/snap 90/dry, excellent snap/Romano bean, goes to 11' on the front of our woodshed then stops, bears heavily at 55 days, leave a few pods for shell beans/next year's seed, reblooms in August for a nice fall crop, WI MI B Sorry I do not have seed available for this one. - Dick...See MoreWhat is the early riser?
Comments (3)Thanks for the quick replies. No other perennial is even close to being in bloom. It shows it as being invasive in some areas. I never noticed it till this year....See MoreAn Early Riser
Comments (7)I had some daffodils pushing up at Christmas time. The cold made them think twice about an early start. I have heard that as long as they don't open up and leaf out they should be fine. Covered in snow right now which will give them protection from the minus 5-10 degrees (-10 inland where I am) Fahrenheit and wind chill of minus 20-30 expected this weekend here. It is cold now and going to get a lot worse. They looked fine before they were buried in snow. I expect they will be fine. I don't know about hosta, but they must have a similar 'antifreeze' in the crowns that daffodils and other bulb plants have in the bulbs and evidently in unfolded spouts. After all it sometimes it freezes two feet deep here and hosta survive, dormant buried. Once they unfold the added surface area must radiate too much heat and they freeze and die off. This is why we huddle up to stay warm. ;-} With temps in the high 30's I'm pretty sure you will be fine. They say 70 seconds in the cold we are going to have can start to cause frostbite.
