What do you do when visiting someone in the hospital/rehab?

I never know what to do when I visit someone in the hospital or nursing home. My mom has had a pretty interesting last six days and has at least three more to go. We've seen each other enough we've discussed everything she and I can think of. It's easier when there are other people are there as there are new topics. She and I have been and are still close. When she was well, and younger, we could spend an entire day talking nonstop at the pool. She's just, um, less cognizant, than before, and so it limits what we can say. I noticed her roommate's daughter is bedside, but they just sit quietly, saying and doing nothing. It's almost like they're waiting on the "inevitable" (she's in her nineties), it's unnerving. Ideas? Suggestions? Stories where you relate?
