........Christmas Cards........

Judy

I have found this year that a lot of people decided not to send Xmas cards anymore. I didn’t send any either.

Anyone else decided not to send cards??

I haven't sent any in years. In general, I feel like greeting cards are such a waste. People send me birthday cards, and I feel guilty saying "that's nice of them", then tossing. Or I keep it for a few days, then toss it. I'd prefer people save their money. Cards are so expensive!!

I send out around 30 to family and friends we don’t see often. Usually it is a photo of the two of us from a vacation in the past year or a scene from the vacation. I enjoy creating it as well.

    Beautiful card Annie.

I send out out around 28 or so, don't always receive one in return but also don't want them to feel obligated. Some think it's too commercial, the cost of postage is high - and going up again - waste of paper, just too busy. I may start culling those that don't send two years in a row.

I really like your card Annie.

Very pretty Annie. I sent out a grand total of 4 this year, because that's home many I received. The number is dwindling each year. I'm o.k. with that. No hurt feelings if I don't get a card from someone. Most were family members anyhow and we keep in touch weekly.

I make my own and send out about 40 - 45 of them each year, even to those who haven't sent one in return. Also birthday cards throughout the year. I'm sorry you don't enjoy the personal touch of receiving a card in the mail from someone who, at least for a moment, was thinking of you. Several people who send to me have gone the way of photo cards, and those are a nice way to see how folks change over the years.

I stopped several years ago. My goal is to start up again whenever I retire.

Yes, I send them -- we make our own too -- this year's was a picture of our lighted village.

Last year, DH noticed that he didn't receive cards and did find that some have decided to stop.

I do notice that we will get a few cards in early December. Those are people that are just not reciprocating.

This year we sent ours out a bit later and of course we get back cards from those that we sent

    to.

Many on the list are old co-workers of DH. For years this is the only catch up that these men did. Well about four years ago that changed. They now host gathering 3 or 4 times a year, so he actually see all these men.

I will leave it up to DH, as this is his holiday. We send about 30.

i once over heard a woman talking about Christmas cards. She said that she stopped sending cards to people she actually sees or gets together with during the holidays and only sends to those that are far or those that she doesn't get to see. This might be the attitude that many are taking.

ETA: Even with postage at 50 cents a card, I don't think this would break the bank for those deciding unless they send out hundred of cards.

I think more and more people are sending holiday wishes and e-cards through social media and texting.

Cards are my favorite part of Christmas, sending and receiving, but then I make and send cards all year for birthdays, sympathy and get well occasions. I have found that most people like to receive "good mail". To me it is the least expensive part of Christmas.

I send them and love getting them...as well as BD cards, etc., My family and friends

are scattered in lots of different places and I love sending and getting the cards. If

I have any on my list like aok, I would welcome them telling me they don't like them

    so I didn't annoy them.

We send about 25-30. Mostly to relatives that are not on social media. I'd say we get about 20 or so in the mail.

Love your card Annie. I make all of my cards for Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries, get well, thinking of you, etc. and I love doing it. For Christmas this year I sent out about 85 cards. I love receiving cards too.

Last year I got three, and one was from our attorney. lol

This year I have 8, one is from a ward councillor who wants our vote. hahahahaha! Yes, much fewer people are mailing cards now, but stamps are getting so expensive. I sent 8, I think, to the Netherlands and it cost me over $22 for stamps alone.

Annie -- that is the MOST beautiful card (and lovely haiku, also). Wish I were on your card list.

Being a terrible procrastinator, my cards have yet to be written. But since I only send to very close friends I don't see over the hols, they are used to it.

I haven't sent out cards in years. My DH sends out a few. We don't send a photo, I don't create anything, I have no news and it was becoming such an affectation I just stopped. We probably get about 10.

I love sending cards. Some are Christmas, some are Solstice, some are generic holiday.

I love decorating with the cards I receive in return. The numbers, alas, have dwindled. And I also send out less... I mean, no appreciation, why should I continue with most of those people?

Annie, Sweet Betsy, I love your cards.

I hadn't sent them for years mostly because I had no one to send cards to. But, this year, we ended up exchanging cards with people we met throughout this past year along with some of our long time friends. I also sent one to my high school art teacher who is now in his 90's and still going strong. I think I sent out about 10 and received about the same amount back. They are kind of fun to display and enjoy.

I buy cards from the dollar store after Christmas for practically nothing, so I don't feel like it's a big expense. I like Annie's practice of making her own and may borrow that idea from her next year.

I send them out still, not so many as before. I get them from a few people still too. My lawncare people sent one that is also a coupon off for the first mow of the season.

Just couldn't talk my self into sending cards this year. Partly I think because of several serious health issues of some close friends and family in the last 3 weeks. Had always sent about 24 or so for many years. Noticed this year that I did not receive a card from several people that had always sent to me, so it must be something that many are doing.

I sent out about seven or eight, and my brother sent out five; we received a total of ten this year, not counting the two e-cards I received. One e-card came from a friend who moved from San Diego to Michigan (to help her aging parents), and I do not have her new address. If she had sent me a card in the mail, I would have it, and so this was a bit disappointing. She and I always exchange birthday cards as well.

I used to make my cards, but I haven't done that for a while, although I do have a decent color laser printer. Here's one from 2005:

This flower was in my front yard in Venice in December back then.

I send out cards, but not near as many as years ago. I love to write a note in each and every one! Takes me forever sometimes because my tremors make it more challenging. There are very few that I don’t write a note in. Some of my friends and I decided that we would enjoy a talk on the phone, rather than exchanging cards.

I haven't purchased cards since the '80s. I do write a letter send out about 50. I think I got about 20. At $.50 a stamp and with every one keeping up via social media it is rather silly I suppose. I love seeing my cupboards full of cards and miss the many I used to get. Everything changes doesn't it.

I send a few - current count is 10 - to people who don't use email, or whom I don't regularly correspond with. Easy to write a personalized note when there's less than a dozen going out, LOL.

Everybody else gets an e-card. I use Jacquie Lawson's website, which I learned about from the old GW:

Nope. I see it as another unnecessary obligation of the holiday season. I stopped sending cards 30 years ago. If it was up to me, I wouldn’t do a tree or gift exchange either. Yes, I’m a rebel.

On the other hand, I’m at the church for every service/program/event during the month of December.

I enjoy them so I send them though not so many any more. I write a letter to each person. A real letter full of news and nonsense. I do not find that Face book actually informs me about other people. Too skimpy and never any real information. I like keeping in touch with old friends. I don't stick them up like I used to. I would save the very nicest, some from year to year, and not put up the really ugly ones. A friend came over and noticed one she recognized and accused me of trying to make it look like I was getting more cards than I actually was. ????? Who knew you put up your cards to boast of your acquaintances. Anyway if I write I find most will write something back.

I haven't sent out personal Christmas cards for years and the only ones I recieve are photo cards from family members that don't live close by. I do send out a few cards to larger business clients just to thank them for their business during the year and to send good wishes for the coming year.

I love the Christmas card tradition, both sending and receiving. I make an evening or afternoon out of writing out cards with holiday stamps and stickers on the back of the envelopes. I love getting them too. I appreciate the different cards and the lovely scenes and verses. If there is a personal note, even better. I display them and continue to enjoy them throughout the season. I think its sad that the practice is diminishing. It's such a simple and joyful thing. Any time you can share a thoughtful wish to some one you care for is wonderful.

I stopped sending them a few years ago. I lost all of my addresses, address books, etc and cards in the flood so I can't even if I wanted to. I have apparently lost contact with several people now and we have a new address too. I have emailed as many as possible with a Christmas greeting.

I love sending and receiving cards. My friends and I exchange cards and postcards throughout the year, including holidays. Of course, we could email, but there’s something special about knowing someone has taken the extra time to choose a card, write a message and put it in the post.

That is what I was thinking Fun2BHere when I sent my two daughters cards. #2 daughter was oooing and awwwwing over the 3D cards when she was here so I decided to send them both one. Now that she is back for Christmas she keeps questioning why I bothered!!!

Beautiful card, Annie! I love the Christmas card tradition too, and design my own using my photographs. I wait for Mpix's 50% off sale every year to have them printed. Even so, it's an indulgence, but I really enjoy it. I also write a letter to friends and family who aren't on Facebook. Some years I include a sheet of photos of the grandkids, etc., that I have printed on a color copier at a local print shop. That, too, gets expensive.

Here's my card for this year. I shot the picture atop a hill less than a mile from my house on a day when the wind seemed to blow in all directions.

On the back it says "Never has my holiday wish for peace been more fervent than it is this year. But the winds of change blow in all directions, and in this most special of seasons they bring hope."

  • DawnInCal

That's beautiful, Alisande. Both the photo and the sentiment. I like that it's not the usual "Merry Christmas, Happy New Year" greeting.

We have a relative who is in a situation where cheery Christmas greetings aren't really appropriate. I found him the most generic card I could this year, but you now have me thinking of making custom cards for him for upcoming holidays throughout the year and for Christmas next year.

I enjoy the cards. I made, and sent, over 100 again this year. I don't usually add a note or letter, just sign them, but considering it takes me days to make them, I think that it shows how much I think of, and appreciate, those I send them to.

I still do and I design the outside of the envelopes with special holiday scenes. Geo and I both being retired military keep in touch with a lot of those folks as well as family and friends.

This year we sent out 104 cards. Some of the people are too elderly to respond, but I know it makes them feel good to receive the card. It just makes the season seem more joyful to me especially with all the commercialism.
