Strange thorny apple tree
Comments (21)Let's be careful about common names - a 'thornapple' is a common name for Datura, aka Jimson weed, which is toxic to eat. Hawthorn fruit - called haws or berries - are edible although not always very tasty. And hawthorns may or may not have thorns...it depends on the species ;-) The fruit does not have thorns and looks more like a rose hip than anything else (also closely related to a rose). When ripe, hawthorn fruit will be a dark orange to red, not green (can be a golden green color in the not common Mexican species). And usually are quite small in size.....seldom over 1/2" in diameter. Crabapples are completely edible as well but again, not always very tasty, especially when raw. But they do make great jellies and are good addition to ciders, as well as being a helpful pollinator for apples. These also may or may not have thorns. Modern day apples are hybrids and have no thorns....ever :-)...See MoreID this thorny tree
Comments (6)Robinia? Aralia? In any case you have to keep cutting them off until they give up, or dig the whole root system out. If you cut them off often enough the energy reserves that are fueling their growth should eventually get used up. Without new leaves left in place to manufacture food the roots will have to become starved at some point....See MoreID: Thorny Tree at ASU
Comments (2)Indeed I have, if you mean Casimiroa edulis. ASU doesn't have a botany department, and their plant sciences have been steadily going downhill. They still have some great professors in plant bio but I've heard that a lot of good ones retire or leave and aren't being replaced. Pretty much the same is happening with the arboretum; a lot of plants listed online have died and not been replaced. In one case I found a healthy Bauhinia lunarioides which was recently removed for mysterious reasons. I noticed sadly that I was the only Plant Biology major listed in the commencement program....See MoreHelp ID tree with thorny trunk
Comments (10)Sometimes, just because you "can" doesn't necessarily mean you should. ;-) How large is the tree you need to cut down, pbrown? What structures, fences and other landscape material etc. are close enough to be damaged? Do you have any experience cutting down trees? Seriously, the thorns wouldn't be what I was most worried about....See MoreEmbothrium
