Painter comes next Friday, not sure of kitchen cabinet color!
Comments (76)Wow, I hadn't realized there were other replies after I posted a couple wks ago. I only came back to check now to rehash my decision. Because no...I still don't know what I'm doing :( I'm literally past obsessing about it. And moved on to being plain, ol' DEPRESSED over it. So much so, that I booked a flight to CA for Feb 26th, so I could go to Ikea and just waste some money on accesories. And NOT paint! At the time, I decided to just put glass in the doors, open up the other couple. Try to find something I really liked to go over the cabs. Nice rug, some under cabinet lighting, and call it a day. But, dh and everyone else knows that would only make me happy for about a wk. So, we're painting. What color? Well, we'll decide that when the guy comes for the doors :( Seriously, I'm just going to flip a coin. Last night I was set on all white. Figured adding some other color in a rug, painting the inside of the glass cabinets green, and adding other stuff wouldn't make it look so sterile. But, that darn floor and the white appliances keep staring at me. I could happily do white cabs if appliances were SS. OR..if the floor was wood. But, having both things against me. I've yet to EVER clip and save a kitchen with light tile, and white appliances. There's a reason for that. I don't like the look ! The black..sigh. I love black. But, since my first post I've changed out my living room quite a bit. It's taking on a lighter tone. And I worry the black is too heavy with it. I've had visions again of going green/gray on the bottom. Dh doesn't want to for resale. And because of how he thinks it'd look against the Lenox Tan paint on the walls. Blue, I love the color you've done! I can totally see doing something like that to work WITH what I have. Not against it. But, again..the paint throughout the whole space would be hard to work with. Dh suggested maybe going with the wall color, at half strength..for the lowers. White uppers. OR..back to black lowers. It's quite obvious I'm all over the map still. And am thankful for all the snow. So, my painter can't get started yet :( Here's my living room. Right off the kitchen. I need to make things flow. And I pretty much stink at this whole decorating thing, so it's a struggle!...See MoreThe cabinets are coming, the cabinets are coming!!!
Comments (6)The exterior of your home is lovely. I believe the symetry of four boxish rooms with a center hall is classic Georgian and I have always been fond of that type of layout. I am sure you are head over heels with anticipation! Good luck, I can't wait to see pics of the kitchen!...See MoreTear apart my small kitchen layout
Comments (18)I would make sure there is a filler piece (not sure if that's what it is actually called) on either side of the refrigerator, rather than just having the tall cabinet on the one side butt right up against the refrigerator. It looks more symmetrical to have an even "box" around the fridge, IMHO. I'd also bump the box out a bit so that the granite overhang on the one side has something to bump up against. It also allows the fridge to be recessed in a bit more so that sides of the fridge don't stick out even a little bit. Jakuvall, I see your point about the increased functionality of the recessed corner sink, but like GauchoGordo, I'd feel claustrophobic tucked back in there! If I were the OP, I'd want my sink out of the corner and under the window. I don't really mind the look of a corner sink, but to be doing dishes and staring into that corner, plus having that upper cabinet in my face ... I wouldn't like it very much. Washing dishes is therapeutic for me, but probably because I can stare out the window while I'm doing them. I also agree with KathyNY76 that the "all drawers for lowers" does not work for all applications, especially in smaller kitchens. Think about what YOU will be storing in those cabinets and get what works for your situation. The last thing I wanted in my kitchen was a bunch of narrow drawer banks!...See MoreThoughts on kitchen layout for small NYC apartment.
Comments (41)hello to all. Sorry for taking so long to respond, just returning after some time with the family in Michigan, where, might I mention, I could get some beautiful real estate for what we pay for a little apartment in Brooklyn. But that's not news to anyone. I have to say the thoughtful responses I've received on this thread, aside from being helpful, have warmed my heart. Ok, hope some of you are still out there. We're not yet certain where the dining area will go. The two obvious choices are by the doors to the patio or across from the kitchen. Either will work fine for the dining. The more important consideration is how we want to configure the living room. Sena01, I like what you did with that layout. (My favorite part is the door that leads to the idyllic green pastures outside, ah, if only. It actually goes to the bedrooms, but you couldn't know that as I left that part out.) There will be a door to the patio on the wall with the radiator. Do you still think the table would work there? The location of the island would in fact work better there as it would not be as close to the entry door. I have to see if the dimensions will allow that layout as when the architects did the drawings they didn't seem to be able to include the dishwasher. Cpartist. Funny you mention mocking up the design with boxes. I tried to build an island with cardboard. I'm no carpenter. It wouldn't stay up but I got some worthwhile raised eyebrows from my kids while doing it. The boxes are a much better idea. Nice thought with your placement of the fridge. We've thought a lot about that and would very much consider it if it weren't for the fact that there is a 10 inch column (that the architects left out of the drawing) at that end of the wall in the kitchen that would push any appliance forward about 5 inches. I love that it would allow us to get the oven as hidden as possible from the living space. It would mean, however, breaking with the clean lines of the cabinetry by about 5 inches. We won't know exactly how it would look until we start breaking some walls down, which I'm considering doing very soon because I can't stand trying to design this space not knowing the complete aspect of the room. I'd like to check out some design rooms to see what a 12 inch drawer/cabinet looks like. I do think we can squeeze and 18 or 20in island, however, that would allow the door to swing entirely open and would allow for us to enter without having to step around the island. By the way, you are all so good with these computer generated designs. What would take me a lifetime you seem to have little difficulty with. Can I ask what software you use? Hope at least some of you are still listening....See MoreUser
