Please help me identify this garden snake (before dh kills it)
Comments (16)Hello, Thanks everyone :) Wanye - I too finally came to the conclusion that it was a blotched water snake. I did not get help from my local wildlife center. I sent in the image and was told that it was a dimaond back. I knew this was not correct. I was then told it was the blotched water snake by - Clint at Texassnakes.net. He was very nice and quite helpful (SUPER NICE GUY). The animal control officer that I sent the image to, said it was a yellow belly water snake, whatever - I dont care as long as it is not a cottonmouth. I have let the snake alone - and will purchase some tongs if I need to relocate it because my husband just cannot come to grips with a water snake in our yard. Otherwise - it is free to live in my garden. Besides with the water source, if he were to kill this one, there would just be more anyway, especially since I have seen the babies for two summers now. Me and my fourteen year old daughter are perfectly ok with being bitten by a non-venomous snake. It only hurts for a little while, not much more than a bee sting in my humble opinion. Speeking of bee stings - I hate to kill things - so much -that a couple of years ago - I moved a honey bee hive (see I truly do hate to kill) I called a couple of beekeepers, and no one would come out - so I moved them myself :)-(Thank God my husband was working in Japan - he would have totally freaked out on this one too) Only ended up with two stings - and that is because when I went back for the second load of bees, guess I did not get the queen the first time. I was too lazy to tape my sleeves to my gloves. I moved them a couple of blocks away to a open field. I looked so funny carrying a box of bees, dressed all in white - and having a hat and my husbands old jersey stretched over it, I had to peek through the holes in the shirt. (my home made version of a bee keepers suit:) I can only imagine what the people driving down the main road where thinking!!! Back to the snakes. I would like to know however - are they agressive by nature, or only if provoked? Meaning, do they try to reatreat if given the chance, or do they stand their ground - there are only a few of these types snakes that I am aware of, but not sure about the water snakes. Thanks for all the help - RT...See MoreNeed help getting out half a tick from DH's back!
Comments (18)I've heard to use a lighted cigarette, candle, etc. and to move it very slowly toward the little bugger ... which gives the critter the idea that this is not a pleasant place to be, and to decide to back out and take up residence elsewhere. Hitting it with a hot pin is something like hitting you over the head with a 2" X 4" - causes some major trauma, which may result in the puking that some refer to - can't tell that by me, one way or the other. Using fingernails, tweezer, etc. usually results in separation of head and body, which is hugely traumatic to the beast ... even more so than for the human. Better to have him/her get the idea to leave voluntarily. But - neither of those options are available now, for the body of the critter has been removed. So the head is no longer thinking and sending messages to the body to cause it to move. I like the idea of using the peroxide, if you have some. And keep an eye on the situation - as folks said, if a redness appears ... .. hie thee to the doctor for medication. You may figure that it's a better idea to have the doctor deal with it now ... and likely I'd be more likely to visit the doctor than you in such a situation, for I don't have to pull out my wallet when making such a visit. I suspect that the possibility of getting Lyme's is rather slim, but I don't know whether it's important to get rid of that head right now (or whether the damage may already have been done). And I don't know whether it's O.K. that one should leave treatment until that rash appears. That seems to be the course that knowledgeable people around here follow, however, if that is of interest to you. Sorry that I can't offer more specific advice. I'll probably get about a half dozen or so of 'em on me in the garden/yard/farm this summer - have candles available in case the power takes its leave on occasion ... haven't smoked since I was about 16 (for about 6 mos. - and I'd have fewer assets today had I decided to continue). Quite likely poorer health, as well (were I still alive) ... as my family has some weak-lung problems. ole joyful...See MorePlease help my DH - Movie Theater Design
Comments (3)I watched my now ex-husband design his home theater. The ceiling is flat black paint from Ben Moore. The walls are a dark brown. He or you might want to read the Theater Builder forums at avs.com. That's the go-to forum for all that kind of stuff. Comments (12)I love GW! Thank you for the responses. I'm a Craigs List-aholic and we bought all our appliances from there over the past two years. Got a steal on the 48" stove and hood, which would have fit perfectly on the long wall where they were intended to go. DH's only request is that they go on the short wall, so he can enjoy the view while cooking. And he loves the big stove. The view is amazing, so we're going to put the stove there even though it doesn't make sense and will look too large. The drawings don't show it well, but the cabinets will go to the ceiling with crown molding. A huge thank you to Seattle Craftsman for putting the ideas into 3D. Makes it much easier to visualize. The hood is 18" tall and will have a cabinet on top, which we hope will help balance out that wall at least a little. I love HollySprings idea of making the right-hand side more of a hutch look. The MW opens to the left, so putting it on the other side of the fridge makes it difficult to land hot bowls. Definitely some good ideas on how to dress up the hutch area. Weedpuller - good thought about cookie sheets. I intended to put them in the cabinet over the fridge, but need to measure to see if that will really work. BMH - thank you. I tend to think about what I have now rather than considering buying stuff for display. Probably comes from spending the last two years with half my kitchen stuff in boxes....See Moreladybug A 9a Houston area
