How to create a gallery wall?
Help! We have lived here for 7 years and we have almost no art on the walls. Mostly because we can't decide on what to buy, or we have prints we've purchased that are irregular sizes.. and he doesn't want me to use nails so I have to use Command strips (so can't be too heavy). Also we want it reflect our personal tastes rather than buying something cookie cutter.
So that's why the wall is blank!
This wall behind our couch is high (we have 10 ft. ceilings) and long (couch is 96" or so).
Where do I begin?
I would love to do a gallery wall but I don't know how many pieces I need, and how much of the wall to fill.
I'll attach some inspiration photos, and some photos of the art we currently own. I love the eclectic look and our home is a mix of modern and traditional, built in the 1910s.

I want to do a gallery wall, but I want it to be able to hold a lot of photos which I hope to change out and update since my new hobby is photography. I had considered mounting the frames directly on the wall, but I am picky about them being even and straight and I'm afraid I won't like it, or I'll get frustrated and not do it. Comments (29)LC For window walls, I love the butted glass look. You might want to view "Paul Mclean Floating Glass House" on utube for a great example of butted glass. It's probably going to be the most cost effective way to get wide open expansive views in terms of glass cost. Putting a lot of glass in a wall will require structural considerations that most likely will have to be certified by an engineer. Engineers are not necessarily expensive. I put a heavily windowed wall in one of my remodels and it was $500 for the engineer. Well worth the cost to get my plans approved. Single pane butted glass does have it's pitfalls mainly a much lower r-value than double paned, Double paned glass panels will significantly improve the r-value, but definitely consider your local temps. Double pane will have a visible seam, but a aluminum furring strip would cover that and not be too obtrusive. I've priced a double pane laminated 6' x 9' piece of glass at Home Depot at $2400. Installation will be a little pricy, but much less than what I've seen from some of the national glass companies. I would contact a local glass company and talk to them about butted single pane and double pane glass. Key conversation would also be with your builder and a structural engineer. Comments (6)I came across this great site that has frames with customized mattes available for very reasonable prices. Wish I would have found it before I spent $80 on 2 mattes at a big box framing store last month! I'd like to do a gallery wall similar to one shown on a blog I follow (Pure Style Home) and whose home was featured in one of my decorating magazines. She mentioned that her frames/mattes came from this site. You can customize the matte to any size and cutout that you need. I haven't tried it yet so I can't speak as to the quality, but a basic white frame and matte should be simple enough. 5 years agoOpps here is example if you did a single piece of art. There are hanging devices with very thin nails and simple fix when you move. I will post examples.

5 years agoHere is one size. The nail looks biggest in this photo but they are thin. They come in various sizes for very light weight to heavier. Great devices. Been using them for years. I find with textured walls, the command strips don’t hold well if at all ok on flat surfaces.
