Design Dilemma Exterior Remodeling

looking for exterior upgrade suggestions

We just bought this cute little Dutch colonial, but we definitely want to make some upgrades. We plan to limewash the brick and paint siding white, windows black, new garage door, etc.

However, i do feel like it looks like something is missing in between those two windows. Any suggestions of what we can do would be appreciated!

Cute house!

This might be more than you want to take on or do, but i always thought a covering over the front door made the house pop more. Something like these:

Something like these seems to help break up all that shingle surface between the dormers. Plus if you made it functional up above, that would/could add more light and floor space upstairs.

Would just adding a 3rd dormer fill that "missing" feeling?

I would choose a white for your house, but I would choose something slightly warmer than what you have. Something more like one of these I agree with Patricia though -- aside from the discoloration on your current stucco, the main thing holding the front of your house back is the lack of greenery. I would do rectangular planters all around the front of your house. The back of your house is stunning!

Yes we plan to put on a new roof. I was planning to go a bit darker. It's funny that the green shutters were initially one of the first things that I thought needed to be changed before we moved in. Now I look at every brick house trying to find a color that I like better and I just can't. Maybe they're still ugly, but I feel differently because they're MY ugly green shutters now.

Wait and see what the shrubbery does this spring. If it doesn't add color via blooms, then I would replace it with a softer looking landscape. Right now it is hiding a lot of your home's features. You might consider staining both the doors at the entry and garage for a warmer, softer look. Not much you can do about the columns, but a big, beautiful lantern style light hanging over the entry would add a lot. I don't think you can get too far away from the classic look of the house; it is grand but you'll get used to it. Somehow, I think unifying the treatment on the trio of gables would help. Can you side the two smaller ones to match the large one?

Yes! I think both are solid options. Love the first one, but could be way more than we want to take on. I think the 3rd dormer could be a great alternative. It would give us a closet window! Haha. Also trying to figure out what to do above garage. Either add in a window or something in the blank area above garage

I would also plan to do some careful pruning in the front garden. Not a mow, blow, and go crew, but someone with some skill for pruning and judicious editing if it isn’t within your skill set. The garden looks thought out and low maintenance, but like it has been a bit neglected recently.
