Thank all who commented on my unknown tree, which was identified as sophora Japonica. Took me forever to fugure out how to post a pic, and when I try to comment, the text dissapears...
I'm seriously considering aquiring a Pagoda tree to replace a dying maple in my yard.

You can ask on the tree forum about its benefits and drawbacks as a yard plant in your area on the tree forum here.

While the interface can be clunky and frustrating to use at times, I haven’t found another source of such great info anywhere else on the web.

Happy to be back look at my photo bucket now, pic of yard work and mackinaw island last yr lilac fest. some family pic. Most of the flowers are our yard and the fenced in lot is our yard. let me know if you get to see it anyone email me, You have to wait to load and slide mouse over black page to see all the wonderful flowers. Very nice and lots of hard HOT work! I am sure you are starting to see more wildlife/butterflies but I want you to expect MORE. I am very amazed by the wildlife I'm now seeing in my garden. I started here 2 years ago and re did the whole yard(way too much turf). I really started from nothing. Last year (gardens 1 year old) I had what I considered a fair amount of birds and butterflies. This summer the garden is popping and I can't believe the b & bs!!! I wish for you an abundance of wildlife in your new and up dated garden. The gardens are beautiful & butterflies are the icing on the flowers...hehe And thank you for sharing.

Way to go Ann! Have a great time in Australia. I had a similar experience before my roommate's birthday. I had bought a tray & vase way in advance, and at the last minute I decided to fill it with 4-oz jars of almost everything I made all summer. I try to do one or two tiny jars of each item for gifts, and it paid off. I also had an experience with a friend not being able to eat dinner. He didn't like vegetables, and had recently had a dinnertime run-in with his girlfriend's grandmother over it (not the most polite guy). So when two friends & I realized we were all making vegetable dishes for a pot luck, we asked the guy's girlfriend to bring dessert. He didn't bring anything, so he had a biscuit for dinner! I don't mean to imply the same personality traits in your vegetarian friends, just that it makes sense to bring something you can eat for dinner if you have special needs. Melissa
