How Do I Start a New Julia Childs Rose?

I've had a JULIA CHILDS Rose bush for a couple of years and I look forward to seeing her constant bright yellow blooms every year. I want to learn how to propagate this beautiful rose so I can make a hedge around my front lawn. Is this possible? how do I do it please? Zone 8, BC Canada

I don't know the patent laws of Canada. It is patented in the US and Australia. Helpmefind.com usually has patent information on a rose. Julia Child

It isn't coming up in the Canadian Patent Office search.

Julia Childs is a patent protected rose.

Hi rhizo, So I'm assuming I'm not allowed to root it? Okay, so you find a rose you like, make sure you know the name of the rose and research that rose to find out if it is patented or not? If it is patented, that means you can't propagate it? Does this apply in all countries everywhere?

helpmefind.com lists Dame de Coeur as 3-4 ft tall and Julia Child as 2-3 ft tall. Even if roses tend to grow taller than stated in your region, I think the chances are that Dame de Coeur will still probably be a foot taller than Julia Child. Nice combo--strong contrast in colors. I love tan roses and I think I have them all, pretty much. Here are the favorites. Best tan roses: 1. Spiced Coffee (I got a nice one from Hortico this year, believe it or not. This rose, like most brown roses, does better grafted, not own root) 2. Honey Dijon 3. Stephen Rulo (Wisconsin Roses carries it) 4. Butterscotch (aka Jactan), the climber (available at Burlington Roses) 5. Pam's Choice (Rogue Valley Roses) 6. Irish Creme (Certified Roses - available at big box stores like Lowes, but only during bareroot season). and if you like mini's, then Smoke Signals (also from Burlington Roses) Julia's Rose is okay, but I haven't found a source to obtain it grafted. I think it would be a MUCH more vigorous rose if it was not growing on its own roots. As an own root plant, it is notoriously a weak plant, and my own root specimen bears that out. It's a rose that just wants to fade away, and I'm on my third or fourth plant because of that. Kathy

You've selected some beautiful, healthy, almost always in bloom roses! They both stay fairly small; Dame de Coeur grew to about 3 1/2 ft. for me. I just measured my 3 yr old never pruned Julia Child at 28 inches.

Pretty petals...500 roses! I have en entire back yard that doesn't have a single flower/shrub, etc., ..but I'm pacing myself. :-) Rose_crazy - the soil is all that but there are still chunks of that deep red sticky clay. I can't recall any place that has yellow roses down here....but I have seen other bush roses (nothing this pretty I don't think!) Let's hope they adapt and I can keep the happy! Diane...thank you! The yellow/purple combo has become my favorite and my son had no idea when he bought the Get Mees. He just knew I needed plants and his "new tradition" he said was going to be to buy perennials each year. (I like that tradition!) Your Get Mees look great. I think you'll be fine rooting it. The law regarding the patented rose only really applies if you are going to be propagating and selling it as a Julia Child rose. While it is technically illegal to propagate cuttings from a patented rose, the law never applies unless you want to sell it. You could take cuttings and plant all you want, and even give them away, as long as you aren't making money off of them.

Besides, even if they wanted to enforce the law, who can tell that you've grown them from cuttings, and who will have the time to come and sue you for rooting a few cuttings?

khatrisidhant, thanks so much. That's good news for me. I wouldn't sell them. At this point, I don't even know how to start a rose from a clipping. haha. This info. is certainly good to know. Thanks again.

Khatrisidhant, that is not correct. If the rose is under patent protection, it is illegal to asexually propagate (via cutting or budding/grafting) for any purpose whatsoever.
