Guest Bedroom Design Dilemma

Hello,

I am needing help decorating my guest bedroom. The quilt and bed frame were given to me by my grandpa and have sentimental value, so I would like to keep these in the design. I painted the walls Creamy by Sherwin Williams. I have no clue what to do with this room with regards to decor, end tables, curtains, sheets and other bed linens. I don't think I can comfortable fit a lot of extra furniture as it is a smaller room. Also, my mom told me to mention that this is my first house and I am young and poor. Thank you!

Congratulations on your first house! Relax and have fun. Most of us accumulated our furniture over time, changing things as our tastes and our budgets changed. I’m fond of garage sales and thrift shops, followed by trips to the paint store. You will develop your eye as you “shop” at furniture stores above your budget, getting inspiration and and setting a goal. As to this room, my first thought is a framed picture of grandpa so you can display it on a night stand or a dresser when you find one and use it in your room. I hate, hate, hate trends and pick my colors by my favorite colors that make me happy. I live where skies are grey for months , so grey is not in this house. Blue is my favorite color, so I use a lot in one room, a little in another room. Maybe green rocks your world, so look at shades of green at the paint store. The quilt will be the colorful star of the room, so white sheets would be fine and not clash with the quilt. Target has really pretty lamps and , remember, you can buy a lamp at a thrift store and a new lampshade at Target, Lowe’s, etc.

i dislike walking into the side of a bed when you walk in a room. my suggestion is to place the bed on the wall opposite the doors with a nightstand on the side straight in the door and a desk on the opposite side which can also be used as a night table that side of the bed. use that little offset of the room as the office. office storage (files or bookcases) could be under the window on the other wall. that would also give a flat surface to prop a suitcase on. put the dresser on the short wall opposite the desk and put the upholstered bench at the foot of the bed for putting on shoes and a place for pillows when you take them of to sleep. I think blackout drapes or curtains are a must also for better sleep.I'll try to find better pictures as examples and post

Grey goes with a lot of colors. You can accent in royal blue or purple. It all depends on how out of your shell you want to be.

in looking at just the one wall with the blue tape, I think it will look great, it's not too crowded. heres a few rooms to show a similar layout. you will need to get substantial lamps to go on each side table and you might consider mirrors above the side tables or some art on each side to make the two sides a bit taller to help with scale of the tall headboard. it can look great.

Hello, I am interested in doing my guest bedroom in a masculine design with golds accents within the nightstand and lamps. I’m a little torn as to the color tone of the nightstands and lamps. A guest room needs to be comfortable and convenient for guests, so a nightstand with lamp would be the first things on my list. Bedding of course, but keep it simple : plain sheets in white or one of the colors in the quilt, two pillows, and that's about it. Art on the walls, a usb outlet, and somewhere for the guests to hang their clothes and put their suitcase.

Congratulations on your new home! I have, like others who have responded to your post, had considerable luck with garage sales, estate sales, and thrift shops. Habitat for Humanity ReStore, Goodwill, Salvation Army, and St. Vincent de Paul can all be good sources for furniture and housewares. Nextdoor can be a good source for free or reasonably priced items (I know this from experience; others have had success with Craigslist and/or Freecycle, but I have not bought anything on either of those sites). Discount stores (Target, Walmart, and the like) can be fruitful, as can IKEA (you may want to check reviews of products on the internet before buying). I have even had some luck in finding items that have been placed at curbside or next to dumpsters for disposal but happened to be just what I needed for a particular purpose. Be wary of used cushions and pillows, as they may harbor vermin; if you buy such items used, have them cleaned thoroughly. Create idea books, but set a realistic budget and stick to it.

Congrats on your first house! The quilt and bed are beautiful. I can understand the sentimentality of using both.

Is your current blind blocking enough sun? If this is an east-facing room, you'll want to make sure there's an adequate window shade for mornings. Ikea has inexpensive blackout blinds. If you don't have room for a nightstand, consider a floating shelf. Take your time with the rest. I'd wager your guest will appreciate bedding over decor prioritization.

I bought this bed after I got divorced in 1986 and wanted something more feminine. it is from the 1890s. The mirrored dresser was my grandmas and the start of buying serpentine oak furniture. I made the teddy bear with one of her old bedspreads that had seen better days. This was my master bedroom furniture until last year when we moved into a house that had room for a king bed. This is now a guest room that we call grammas room. I like the quilt folded at the end of the bed. it doesn't look as busy but still an important part of the room. Pull colors you like from your quilt for other bedding, drapery and art. Love decorating with and for family. I wanted to say too that all the bedding, pillows and quilt on the bed were bought at garage sales and thrift stores. I like to change the look often So don't want to spend a lot of money.
