I shouldn't have looked at the Vintage Website
Comments (22)Dallasguy, I don't actually grow "Madame Antoine Mari" in my garden. I just admire it from afar ... the MAM specimen at the Fort Worth Botanical Garden and other gardens here in the neighborhood that grow her. From what I've seen, her blooms are kind of like my 'G. Nabonnand' in that they don't last long at all, but keep coming all the time. I don't think they'll last any longer in the ground. It's not a negative for me, but I understand that it is for many people. The thing I really appreciate about that rose is the shape of the plant itself, it's twiggy habit, and the porcelain quality and purity of its bloom color when the bud first opens. I have resisted purchasing 'Heromsa' for my garden for the very reason that you mentioned. Cut it back to 6"? I have never cut an OGR back that far, or even close to it. 'Reine des Violettes' is one of my favorite roses of all time. I didn't mention it before because it's not a rose for everyone ... but definitely is for me. I am so prejudiced FOR that rose that it's usually best if I keep my mouth shut, unless directly asked about it. Personally, I can't imagine gardening without it. It has a lot of character in my very biased opinion. I grow mine as a short climber, I think it's most elegant that way, but you could prune it as a shrub without much effort. Yes, it reblooms fairly well for me. Definitely not non-stop like a china or a tea rose, but after its huge spring flush, I get a sprinkling of blooms here and there until late fall. It rebloomed somewhat for me the first year, but got a lot better after 3 years. There's something intangible about Reine des Violettes for me, can't really explain it. Or maybe I can ... when you combine thornlessness, fully-petaled bloom with a charming button eye, unique color blending, & fantastic fragrance, how on earth could I resist? If you do decide to get this rose, and I'm not saying you should ... get it from The Antique Rose Emporium. Their specimen is great & truly thornless. Randy...See MoreWhy are light fixtures so hard? Comments (14)Thanks for your opinions so far! This is a picture of the downstairs (excuse the boxes and coats please) I need a light for there too. I think it would make sense for them to be the same, but maybe I am wrong. Jamies the light is just terrible! It makes DH especially nuts because he uses one of the hall closets for his clothes. I would like to put a solartube in one of these days. My dad put one in his upstairs hallway and it made a world of difference even at night. Ok - I guess I need to give up on liking the light and settling for something that goes and provides the most light possible. How about one of these? Currently the light fixture takes one 60 watt bulb I think. #1 option - This one takes 4 100watt bulbs... #2 option - and this one takes 3 100 watt bulbs... #3 option - This one takes 5 20 watt G4 halogen bulbs. I dont understand what that is compared to regular bulbs... #4 option I like this but it only takes 3 60 watt bulbs (and it is the most expensive)......See MoreCould Use Some Help Selecting Light Fixtures
Comments (19)I always enjoy when people return to the forums to post updates of their projects. I finally got the chandelier installed in my kitchen and wanted to show it to you all. Deciding what length to hang it was tricky because there's really no standard for a chandelier in the kitchen, or at least an eat-in kitchen like ours. I went slightly higher than the 30"-34" that's recommended in a dining room because I didn't want it to be imposing. I really like the result. It seems to break up all the white and stainless steel and completes the space. And the function! Here, I was just getting a chandelier to look pretty; I got that PLUS great lighting ;) We ripped out and drywalled over the two sad, sad can lights that emitted almost no wattage. Baking cookies this weekend was so much more pleasant now that I could actually see!...See MoreNew build - when are fixture selections needed?
Comments (1)The builder may be looking ahead to possibly save you additional cost and delay. If a large and/or heavy fixture needs to be attached to something in addition to the electrical junction box, you might need some additional structure above the ceiling, or in the walls for sconces, to mount it to. It's a lot easier to put it in before the sheetrock goes up....See MoreFlo Mangan
