I am no expert, but I think the one you love might be too modern for your house...unless you plan to modernize the place in general? I think the second one would be better...

I have to preface my comment by saying that we had the exact same light fixture in the upper hall of the 1973 colonial which we left last year. There was never enough light up there. I installed a sconce because I don't like overhead light, but there still wasn't enough light and I never solved the problem.

The decision becomes easier if you have a theme. If I were you I'd choose the downstairs lights first, possibly harmonizing with the DR fixture. The foyer light, and then the front hall fixture, would continue the feeling of the DR chandy, and a direction for the upper hall light might naturally reveal itself out of those decisions. But if it doesn't I would use something quiet and unobtrusive and in dark tones like the woodwork (or even non-shiny brass, if the door hardwares is brass) as opposed to silvery. I see another ceiling fixture in a room off the upper hall. If there are more like this upstairs, I would try to stick with something similar.

Do you have modern furniture? I think all but the first are too contemporary if you don't.

Gosh that is tough not seeing the rest of your home. The second seems the best from what you showed us. Would help to see more pics of your home.

Thanks for your opinions so far! This is a picture of the downstairs (excuse the boxes and coats please) I need a light for there too. I think it would make sense for them to be the same, but maybe I am wrong.

Jamies the light is just terrible! It makes DH especially nuts because he uses one of the hall closets for his clothes. I would like to put a solartube in one of these days. My dad put one in his upstairs hallway and it made a world of difference even at night.

Ok - I guess I need to give up on liking the light and settling for something that goes and provides the most light possible.

How about one of these? Currently the light fixture takes one 60 watt bulb I think.

#1 option - This one takes 4 100watt bulbs...

#2 option - and this one takes 3 100 watt bulbs...

#3 option - This one takes 5 20 watt G4 halogen bulbs. I dont understand what that is compared to regular bulbs...

#4 option I like this but it only takes 3 60 watt bulbs (and it is the most expensive)...

Ohmygosh! I seriously love two of the ones in your first post. Can you please tell me where you found them? The first one with the circles and the last one - the chandelier one. Sorry they don't work for you - they are def more contemporary. So they work for me! =) I need that chandelier. :) Hope it is big enough for me. Thanks.

For what you are going for I think #2 or #4 in this second set. #1 seems too calm and traditional for your style and I'm not sure how much light you would get out of #3. If I had to choose between 2 and 4 I would choose... 2. I really like it. But I usually swim against the current so we shall see what others say. :)

I like the first 2 in this 2nd posting of lights. the first would be good for the hallways (not as elaborate). the 2nd one would carry the style but be more elaborate for the entry way.

I'd start with 4 @40W bulbs in the hall one - that be 160W - more than double what you have now. I have a 1@ 60W fixture in my 8x9 laundry room and feel like I can't see in there! I'm putting in a fixture that will take up to 3 @ 60W. i'm going to start w/3 @40W which will double the wattage in there. If that isn't enough then I'll move up to 3@60W.

I looove #3 - just have no idea where one would use it except maybe a bathroom.

and the last one would be nice in a small DR.

Absolutely no to the 3rd one (halogen lights). I agree with desertsteph: the first 2 in the second grouping would be wonderful and allow you to adjust the wattage (that plus a dimmer switch ;) )

The foyer and upstairs hall don't have to be the same, but they should coordinate. I like the first one in your second grouping the best.

I don't know what your budget is like, but Hubbardton Forge has great fixtures. Rejuvenation is another one of my favorites.

Thank you all for your help. I am about ready to give up and let DH pick out something. He says 12" is too high, so only flat flush mount. What do other people use that have regular ceilings I wonder.

I am going to look a little more today, then throw in the towel! I dont know why I find this so frustrating.

I think I vote for.... the first one. I think it is very pretty and more interesting than the second one, which just has that plastic shade at the bottom and seems a bit bland for your taste. Good luck with your decision!

I finally made a decision. I decided that if I wasnt buying somethign I loved, I shouldn't spent too much, so I found these....
