Smith's Parish in my garden is a gracefull well foliated shrub. It is a mound of 3x5. I find the flowers to be rather insignificant, though the rebloom here is good. Someone else may be more impressed with it or have photos for you.
Pleasant Hill Cemetery is charming. The original grows very near to the home garden of Vintage. Mine has taken a few years to act like a climber. It is in almost constant bloom. I don't know about fragrance. It is disease resistant here also.
Manchester Guardian Angel is one of my favorite roses. Mine is from a cutting from the Manchester Cemetery that took and grew like crazy. This is a very large rambling climber. It has great rebloom.
Indigo has been a weak grower for me. It may not be for others.
I reccommend that you send for the Vintage catalog. I think it is a wonderful way to learn about old roses.

In the coastal strip of Southern California, (mild, cool, no warm humidity, little rain) we have grown "Smith's Parish" for years. (Decades, really.)
It used to be maintained at about 10 ft wide x 8 ft high with fairly hard pruning.
The rose's determination out-ran ours. We gave up pruning, and now it's -- well -- HUGE.
But it rusteth not, neither doth it mildew -- EVER. It blooms continuously.
In a cool climate, it really does have at least 5 different colors and forms:

In a warmer climate, fewer variations, I am told.
Bob Edberg is positive that this is Robert Fortune's 'Five-Colored Rose.'

"Placerville White Noisette" is much like 'Blush Noisette.' It's been here for years, and it is a rounded shrub of perhaps 4 ft x 4 ft, covered at all times with big sprays of blooms. VERY fragrant. No rust or mildew. We call it "Jacob Zeisz," as it came from the grave of a young man of that name.

"Manchester Guardian Angel" is a HUGE arching plant in the Rambler mode, as noted. It will overtake all in its path, so give it some real estate. It is arching, graceful, a good bloomer, disease-resistant, fragrant, and armed with a plenitude of truly vicious ruby-red prickles.

Indigo was a fatally weak grower here. Even its petals mildewed, so that the ONE bloom it produced was too deformed to evaluate.

Smiths Parish is one of my first roses..it blooms all the time and is very healthy and it is easily 6x8 (pruning is hit and miss for me)

Jeri, thanks for the pics of Smiths Parish. This is one I need to have, though the thought of it getting that big sort of worries me, I have a boring butterfly bush that I am going to remove and this sounds like a good replacement.

Unfortunatly, Manchester Guardian Angel sounds like it will get too big for my space. Placerville white is more the size I need. Can you suggest a few other constant blooming roses that I could look for? They need to stay on the smaller side and I would like them to have good fragrance. As far as OGR's go I currently have:

You can prune Smith's Parish enough to keep it compact. It doesn't mind that.
We just quit doing it because -- well -- it was a difficult job, because of the location.

Louis Phillipe (China)
Emmie Gray (Found, Bermuda, China)
Lady Ann Kidwell (Poly-Tea)
Maybe 'Mme. Lombard' (Tea)
'Etoile de Lyon' (Tea)
Maybe 'Mme. Antoine Rebe'?
But you really need to hear from folks more in your area.

Thanks again Jeri. I looked them up and really like Mme Lombard, G Nabonnand and Etoile de Lyon. Hopefully Randy will see this post and will offer some other suggestions.

I have Westside Road Cream Tea and Blumenschmidt and love both of them. WRCT is definitely one of the smaller teas. It blooms constantly and is a spreading plant but not a fast grower. Blumenschmidt is also young but seems to be a bigger grower, but the canes are not very thick and I think it could probably kept trimmed to a manageable size. It also blooms quite a lot, but then what tea doesn't? I haven't noticed much fragrance in either, but these are young plants. The only teas I can smell are Duchesse de Brabant and its sport, Mme. Josepth Schwartz.

Hi, Dallasguy. You have some nice OGRs already growing in your garden. That's a first rate group of roses that you have ... many of my favorites. I'm also very fond of 'G. Nabonnand' that Jeri mentioned above. Its scent is extremely nice, but also extremely light to my nose, not strong at all, so it may not meet your criterion of fragrance. I am especially glad to see that 'Duchesse de Brabant', 'Madame Antoine Mari', 'Souvenir de la Malmaison' & 'Cramoisi Superieur' live in your Dallas garden.

Next month, you might want to make a trip to the rose garden at the Fort Worth Botanical Garden. You can see quite a few OGRs in person blooming there. Sorry I'm not giving you much advice here ... I'm just so impressed with the roses you already have.

Thanks Ingrid I hadn't seen Mme Joseph Schartz. I checked it out, it looks great! Too many roses to choose from! Is it a good rebloomer? What about the HP Reine Des Violettes? or Reine Victoria? I love the color, do they actually rebloom?

Someone else torturing me with Westside Road Cream Tea.

It may be my first venture into white....

I've got Cels Multiflora and Rock Hill Peach Tea from Vintage a while ago.
They stay small, re-bloom well and fragrant.
I love them.
I killed Pleasant Hill Cemetery once (I accidentally weeded out) but a baby cutting has grown up.
It's a great climber as its canes are really flexible as the Vintage description.
I am going to try Westside Road Cream Tea this spring.

It has been an increasing passion/obsession LOL, I probably have around 60 different roses. My backyard has no grass, just beds of roses and perennials and roses in pots around the pool area.
I am glad you responded since you are in the Dallas area I have a few questions for you. Does your Antoine Mari hold her blooms? Mine is in a large ceramic container and the blooms last a day. I was wondering if it would behave differently in the ground? The Hermosa I have has really sort of bolted,long arching canes and I expected it to stay more compact. Can I cut it back to about 6" without damaging it? Lastly, I remember you mentioned that you grew Reine de Violettes. Does it behave like a climber here or can it be trained as a shrub? Does it have any rebloom? Thanks for any info you can give me.

Dallasguy, I don't actually grow "Madame Antoine Mari" in my garden. I just admire it from afar ... the MAM specimen at the Fort Worth Botanical Garden and other gardens here in the neighborhood that grow her. From what I've seen, her blooms are kind of like my 'G. Nabonnand' in that they don't last long at all, but keep coming all the time. I don't think they'll last any longer in the ground. It's not a negative for me, but I understand that it is for many people. The thing I really appreciate about that rose is the shape of the plant itself, it's twiggy habit, and the porcelain quality and purity of its bloom color when the bud first opens.

I have resisted purchasing 'Heromsa' for my garden for the very reason that you mentioned. Cut it back to 6"? I have never cut an OGR back that far, or even close to it.

'Reine des Violettes' is one of my favorite roses of all time. I didn't mention it before because it's not a rose for everyone ... but definitely is for me. I am so prejudiced FOR that rose that it's usually best if I keep my mouth shut, unless directly asked about it. Personally, I can't imagine gardening without it. It has a lot of character in my very biased opinion. I grow mine as a short climber, I think it's most elegant that way, but you could prune it as a shrub without much effort. Yes, it reblooms fairly well for me. Definitely not non-stop like a china or a tea rose, but after its huge spring flush, I get a sprinkling of blooms here and there until late fall. It rebloomed somewhat for me the first year, but got a lot better after 3 years. There's something intangible about Reine des Violettes for me, can't really explain it. Or maybe I can ... when you combine thornlessness, fully-petaled bloom with a charming button eye, unique color blending, & fantastic fragrance, how on earth could I resist? If you do decide to get this rose, and I'm not saying you should ... get it from The Antique Rose Emporium. Their specimen is great & truly thornless.

Sunflower seeds. (not really) he was there eating something and I happened to be there with the camera.

Melva, I didn't realize just how many cardinals there are here in the Dallas area until I began putting out sunflower seeds. Now I see a lot of them. Great shot of him, he really stands out among the white tree flowers.

The cardinal is one of my favorite birds...I would stock a feeder just for them...but they always broad cast it and other birds show up, like the sparrow families...
