where do I place my new furniture?

I bought a new grey velvet couch and a faux animal skin rug for my apartment living room which Ive recently rented. I would like the couch to be the main feature of the open floor plan room. however, I would like to be able to watch tv from the couch, and be able to see the fireplace as well. the tv needs to be against the wall it is currently placed against unless I run an extension cord along the floor. placing the couch along the wall facing where the tv currently is did not look as good as I thought it would. I eventually intend on buying an accent chair for the living area as well. should I move the tv ? where should I place the couch!?

Did you not measure the space before buying the sofa? I’m assuming those are doors behind the curtains and not windows? I would normally [not really]* suggest moving the sofa down so it’s not sticking out past the wall and mounting the tv with an articulating tilt mount but if those are doors, it will interfere with the function of them, regardless if they’re french doors or sliding. My suggestion would be to check the return policy where you bought it. Or if they have it in a smaller length, see if you can exchange it.

*not really because the sofa is too big for the space. Measure twice, cut once.

Another possible option would be to clear everything off the mantle and place the tv up there or get an articulating mount and mount it on one of the side walls above the mantle. It will swivel out so it looks like it’s parallel with the mantel. Then place the sofa so it’s facing whatever’s behind the curtains. There needs to be enough space to walk, though, and it looks like it might block off the room if you do this layout. How much space is between the walls? And what’s The length of the sofa? Ideally, you’d want space on each side of the sofa but that doesn’t look like it’s possible here. It also would be pretty close to the fireplace and with the tv mounted above it, that’s asking for major neck strain.

My suggestion still stands to return the couch and find something smaller.

Cozy seating for the family... the wall between the windows can have a large piece of art on it and drapes on windows in a lightweight fabric to soften the space would be great..what colors are you hoping to introduce into the room?...love the white shiplap and white credenza with sconces...great start..

Observations: A) Finish a guest room in the large utility area. B) Use a Murphy Bed [check wall attachment in a basement] or a sofa/hide-a-bed in the open area. Either could work depending on how the space is arranged. Nice of you to have a Bathroom in the basement for your guests. Where are the windows this area? If this is going to function as social/sleeping space, please be sure an EGRES is available.

If you buy smaller sized furniture, or even apartment sized furniture, you will be able to fit a lot more into the space. You also will find that things will fit better in the space in general. The old owners furniture is much too bulky for the space. We also agree that you should look into getting a round dining room table, as it will create ease of access. I just have the couch moved away from the wall becusee I got tired of moving it around. it actually does fit against that wall that it appears to be against now without blocked the patio doors (yes, a balony is behind the curtains.) I just don't particularly like it against that wall, it just looks wierd and leaves alot of empty space within the room. I can try putting it so I faces the balcony. it's not as big as it looks..or maybe the room is not as small as it looks. but I should have plenty of room on either side..I'm just afraid that if I do this I'll have 2 empty walls on either side and a tv console table with no where to go.

I'm also not allowed to put a tv mount on the wall becusee I'm renting and the landlord doesn't want huge holes in the wall

I think I’d try it perpendicular to the tv. You could then have a chair where the couch is now.

Swap places with the tv and sofa....that tv wall looks longer for the sofa.

Would the TV fit on the ledge over the fireplace? Then you could angle the sofa to face them both and go from there.

yes it does I would just have to run an extension cord up the fireplace which I'm not sure how good that will look. angle it so it would be facing the curtains?

My guess is it looks empty to you because you don’t have a coffee table. As long as it doesn’t interfere with the balcony door(s), leave the couch where it is now (but not hanging off the end of the wall), get a taller and narrower tv stand - maybe a taller media cabinet even, a coffee table and a large piece of art to hang above the sofa.
