window replacement in old aluminum siding
Comments (3)We just replaced aluminum framed windows in our house with steel siding. We had it done by one of the best window installation firms locally. They had a real problem because they didn't want to remove the siding and just used brute force to beat the old frames from their sockets. I think if it would have been easy, they would have attempted to remove the siding, but they didn't....See Moreconfused about aluminum-clad windows
Comments (27)"but is there no way to clad a window properly? " None besides paint that requires periodic renewal as it weathers and develops breaks in the film. There is no way to make a seal that will exclude water indefinitely (or in many cases even for a reasonable time). "I have see clad windows that are 20+ years old that are fine." Have you taken them out and apart to determine if they really are in good shape? I would bet money that there is rot under the cladding. The cladding may still look good, and the wood surface on the interior may still look good, but there is no way to tell without tearing them apart if rot has started. Solid wood windows can almost always be repaired (unless they have really been allowed to decay extensively). Every piece of the window frame and sash can be replaced. I have worked on wooden double hung windows that are original from the late 1700s (old town Alexandria, VA). No one wants to perform maintenance, and the continued search for 'maintenance free' has led to all sorts of solutions that are never going to last as long as a plain old wooden window. Windows being made now are generally estimated to have a life of only 30-40 years....See MoreReplacement wood windows vinyl or aluminum clad?
Comments (5)More suggesting it because there are options to have a wood interior with a non-wood exterior. Wood is great and a lovely material, but there are better options in many cases if you are not compelled to use wood via some sort of historical guideline....See MoreCorner window - aluminum or aluminum clad?
Comments (3)Thanks Windows on Washington. I kind of feel like if we're going to pay a premium price for Fleetwood, it would be silly for me to cover it up with wood on the inside. It would probably be cost prohibitive also. Since this window will be in the front of the house, I forgot to mention that we'll also have 3 operable windows, a side light (door height window next to our front door) that we'll also have to purchase to match this corner window. I went to a window store today and mentioned Kolbe since they do offer a corner window (assembled in the field by a glass shop). The sales guy said I should check out Windsor since he said their windows were pretty comparable to Kolbe and they too offer a corner window. Are there and fiberglass clad windows which I'm guessing may not be the best option for this window since it's West facing and gets a lot of sun... Thanks, heather...See MoreHomeSealed Exteriors, LLC
