Lighting Design Dilemma Kitchens

Help with kitchen and family room lighting

I would really appreciate some advice in regards to lighting. My husband and I are adding recessed lighting to our existing kitchen and tv room. I am concerned about a having added to many cans. The ceilings are no high, they are only 8’ 4”. Please let me know what you think.

Are the recessed lights 4" or 6" and are they LED?

We have the same set up. Here are some pictures so you can see that I coordinated the lighting color, but it's not too matchy matchy. Since these were taken, we've done built ins on each side of the fire place. Need to update my pics! Looking toward kitchen, standing at the table... Hi David Ideally, I would like to either go with all 4" or 6" cans. I was persuaded not to use 4" cans as the light output might not be sufficient for 10' ceilings. I am leaning towards Cree CR6 lamps (3000K, 800L, with Legrand Adorne dimmer switch), if I do decide to go with 6" cans or CR4 for 4". My electrician recomends a generic brand (Electric Zone, 3000K, 1200L). With UCL, would the cans still need to be placed within countertop edge (25.5" in my case)? I visited a few lighting stores locally and almost all of them placed the lights (cans) in a grid pattern over the walkways, which is contrary to what the correct practice should be as highlighted in the houzz and garden web forums. I am attempting to get a good lighting balance balance and not over do it. Appreciate the help and guidance.

The plan separates each living space with access from a central hall. It would work well for an office building but not so much for a house especially f you plan to entertain. I find that trying to make a good plan out of a bad one is usually a waste of time and effort. Its like renovating a house that hasn't been built yet. Decide what you think an entertainment space should look like and develop the house around it. But I would not design a house around an occasional use. The interrelationships of family members should be the dominant theme of a house. And I would never put a level change in a living space unless there was an alternate wheelchair route. If you plan to entertain, the front door should have wheelchair access too. An accessible half bath would be good too.

Beth, I do like the edgecomb. The Dining Room and our living room are connected because our house is a cape. So both rooms have to be the same color - currently edgecomb. If I change the dining room paint I have the repaint the living room also. The hallway and kitchen header that faces into the dining room also have to be the same colors because of the way they flow together. (That header is the only part of the kitchen that will be painted as the other two walls will be cabinets and backsplash. The family room, which is open facing the kitchen, is the only room where I could make a clean break and change colors, but I want those two rooms to be cohesive, just struggling to pull it all together.

It looks like quite a few in the family room, if that is the open space in the bottom left of the sketch. If you want to use that many I recommend putting them on a dimmer switch, and/or, having more than one switch for the room so you can turn some off or down. I am not an expert, but I know I like good strong lighting at times, and softer lighting other times. Also consider whether or not you will have any table or floor lamps. Good luck!

The kitchen kighting is a bit of a puzzle . Do you not have upper cabinets along the left wall? Lighting is best done in layers , so overall lighting, then decorative lighting and then task lighting.

Th left wall has upper cabinets except for in front of the windows. And yes the TV room is the open space at the bottom of the drawing. Thanks for your comments.

My lighting question is more about the Tv Room but I included the kitchen because it is all an open space.

A19 regular format 100w equivalent led bulbs put out 1600 lumens. Using those in your cans would reduce the fixture count by half, imo. You can also use undercabinet leds in some locations.

I'd be tempted to just do the four corners in the family room (instead of 9 total), and maybe add a nice-looking flushmount in the center, if your furniture arrangement makes that desirable. People seldom complain about too much light, but that's a lot of cans.

As an example, in our family room (20 x 20 with 10 foot ceilings) we have 11 cans (all incandescent) and a center mount for a small chandelier. It’s not at all overkill and the lighting fills the space nicely (they’re all on dimmers). In another room (16 x 16) we have 8 cans also with a center fixture and there is not enough lighting IMO.
