Comments (17)"I love my vintage GE percolator. It uses the same principle to make coffee as a the stove top percolators you see in Italy-- and the Italians know a thing or two about good coffee!" Yes, they do know a thing or two about coffee, and that's why they don't use percolators -- they use moka pots! ;-) -- Moka Pot -- Coffee Percolator Not really the same principal, other than they're both stove-top appliances. A moka pot sends the hot water through the coffee grounds once, and the resulting brew is held in the non-heated upper chamber until consumption. A percolator circulates hot water through coffee grounds over and over again. That's why percs get knocked by the 'geeks. However that doesn't mean that the OP shouldn't try a percolator, as they would be able to find one very cheap at a second-hand store......See MoreSmall appliances something else to consdier
Comments (4)Percolator coffee is wonderful and makes great hot coffee. French press are only good for a few cups at a time and don't keep coffee hot. I have both a Sunbeam and Farberware electric perk, espresso stove top, and stove top percolator. I fully believe in buying used as much as possible, the materials are much nicer and the design/manufacturing is better too. Only 3 of my 6 coffeemakers are used because it's hard to find them... catlover: made of metal ? no unfortunately. But Italian manufacturers still make nice metal coffeemakers....See MoreInstant Coffee recommendation?
Comments (29)Glad to see I'm not the only one worried about the lack of coffee! My mom always used a melita -- I went to several stores yesterday and couldn't find one. So I bought a french press--Bodum. After brewing, the cup was loaded with coffee grounds. I know you are supposed to use a coarse ground, but looking at the actual holes in the press, I noticed that they are very large--apparently I didn't grind the beans properly. Though I have the say the coffee tasted great after I strained it. Love the tied up filter idea and will try that today:) Just in case......See MoreWhat has happened to coffee makers?
Comments (29)I use a cheap Mr Coffee espresso machine that I received as a wedding gift twenty years ago this month. It has never done a great job steaming the milk, and unless the coffee is fine enough, the coffee ends up too weak. I tried switching to a Krups pump-type espresso machine, which steamed the milk a little better, but the coffee wasn't any better and it had a plastic-y flavor. Plus the machine was noisy, and hard to clean. When it finally blew a gasket, literally, I went back to using the old Mr Coffee machine, and have found that if I use Cafe Pilon pre-ground espresso the results are much better than if I buy whole beans and use my burr grinder. I have one two-espresso-shot latte every morning, occasionally I'll have another after lunch. The only thing I know about percolators is that at the home-based coffee shop near my father-in-law's place in Maine, there's a sign that says "No percolators" and if you ask the shop owner about the sign he will explain (at length) about how a percolator does everything wrong if what you want is good coffee....See More- 7 years agolast modified: 7 years ago
