Most kids that age would be into downloadable games played on tablets or their phones. Even my grands who are 4 and 6 have kiddie kindles they play games on when traveling. In fact I think the six and a half year old is allowed to use one her parents older tablets now that she is into more advanced Minecraft games.

What watchme said. Most kids have their devices and games all set up to go. Check with the parents about this.

My 12 yo plays video games on a small system or tablet. Sometimes she watches downloaded movies or listens to music on her tablet. Lately she spends a lot of time watching out the window though, interested in what is going on around her.

Nintendo Switch would be a great gift. Maybe with a gift card to get some games.

Why not teach them to play games that exercise their thinking muscles like “Twenty Questions” (we used to spin that out to about 120 questions when our daughter was little) or Categories (name a fruit, type of car, vegetable, country, state, whatever, but all in the same category) that hasn’t been named by someone else, Spotto (look for particular makes/colours of car, or license plates, or item on the roadside etc).

Are they riding with other kids or just family? The kids tend to entertain themselves when riding in a group. Usually there is an electronic device playing music. There are possibly a few singalongs. My kids only take their phones. It gets bulky when you start carrying other stuff.

Audio books to share and talk about.

Why not play roadside alphabet. The object is to find all letters of the alphabet in alphabetical order. The findings must be outside the vehicle. The participant has to say the letter and the word or object in which he found the letter. For example, one might say I see 'a' in Alpo, 'b' in better, 'c' on a license plate. etc. The first one that gets to 'z' wins. The game usually proceeds quickly until one needs letters "j, x, or z". One problem: the players sitting next to windows has an advantage over someone sitting in the center of the car.

Another variance of this game is to see how many different state license plates one can find.

Nintendo 3DS. Better overall mobile gaming experience than the Switch (3DS is designed exclusively for mobile/handheld gaming, while the Switch, well, switches). Also way longer battery life. And two 3DSs are about the same price as one Switch. I also find the 3DS to be a nice change of pace to dicking around on my phone.

As for non-electronic games and activities, books (if they don't get hideously carsick from reading while in motion), and there are miniature magnetic editions of lots of board games so they pack up easily and the pieces stay stuck on. Chess can always be fun. Depends on how nerdy they are.

I'd expect 14 year olds to be able to come up with their own amusements while traveling. That includes little car games such as others have mentioned....A 14 year old I know just goes on the internet (Mom's credit card to handle the charges; settle up with Mom in cash) to buy what he wants.

Our grandsons are enjoying chess. They sell a small set for traveling and the pieces are magnetic to stay on the "board."
